Gōra Kadan

A first-class ryokan in Hakone national park, an eighty-five-minute shinkansen ride from Tokyo that somehow feels like another world entirely. It started as an imperial family retreat, and the bones still show: tatami rooms, open-air stone baths, and a mineral pool ringed with enormous rocks. Mount Fuji sits in the frame beyond the trees. The Michelin Guide awarded it 3 Keys. Seasonal kaiseki, total quiet, and a convincing argument for the bullet train.
