The building was a lunatic asylum once, which the Hotel du Vin wears lightly, having turned the old stone pile into one of Edinburgh's more atmospheric places to sleep. Rooms in the original wing have the edge on character, but the newer ones keep pace in finish and feel. Colors run dark and rich throughout, and the plaid is refreshingly restrained. Downstairs, a busy bistro and a well-stocked bar keep the whole thing from feeling too reverential.
