    A family-owned hotel tucked into a quiet lane just off the Avenida da Liberdade, with the Botanical Gardens visible out the back windows. The Art Nouveau facade gives way to marble floors, ornate furnishings, and guest rooms done in soft pastels and rich fabrics, all designed by Graça Viterbo. Double-glazed windows keep the city at a polite distance. The breakfast buffet draws genuine enthusiasm, and the historic center is an easy walk in any direction.
