  1. Impala

    Egyptian Middle Eastern

The name comes not from the antelope but from a cherry-red 1964 Chevrolet the chef drove around Egypt as a kid, which tells you most of what you need to know about how personal this Soho restaurant is. Egyptian and North London cooking wind together across a menu that moves through wood-oven breads, grilled meats, pilaf, and pasta, with duck roasted in molasses and fig sauce as the dish people can't stop talking about. It landed at number 15 on the National Restaurant Awards list.

    Three honors, in evidence:

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. It runs on the scored places nearby: more good stuff within reach, higher score. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
