Keninji Gion Maruyama
Japanese
A two-Michelin-starred kaiseki restaurant beside Kennin-ji Temple, with Yasaka Pagoda framing the view. The gate and courtyard set the tone before you've touched a menu, the stone path dampened in summer to cool the air. The chef frames the meal around five senses you can't see: light, sound, temperature, fragrance, taste, all considered before the food arrives. Kyoto formality at its most considered, and about as dressed-up as a dinner gets.
