Kengo Kuma designed this luxury hotel to echo the machiya townhouses and temple architecture of its Higashiyama neighborhood, and the result is a rare thing: an international hotel brand that doesn't feel imported. Rooms lean traditional in spirit, with floor-to-ceiling windows and full modern amenities filling the gaps. Some suites come with private onsen baths. The Auriga Spa adds more, and SingleThread, the celebrated California restaurant, has its first outpost outside the U.S. here.
