A converted riverside warehouse on the Tyne, the Malmaison is the kind of hotel that greets you with a French-speaking lift and a Parisian-style brasserie, which feels both slightly absurd and entirely correct for Newcastle's Quayside. Rooms are plush without being stiff, beds are enormous, and several look straight out over the river. The vibe is smart but relaxed, skipping the stuffiness that tends to come with the thread count.
