1. Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern

    A Forbes Five Star lakeside hotel that's been around forever and earns every bit of the fuss. The Belle Epoque building sits right on Lake Lucerne with the Alps framed in every window, and the rooms with private balconies make it almost cruel to leave. Inside it's all restored marble floors and grand pillars, with enough contemporary art and Italian furniture to keep things from feeling like a museum. The crowd dresses well and moves slowly, which is exactly right.
