    A hotel a block off the Gran Vía that the Swedish royal family originally opened in the 1950s, which tells you something about Madrid's range. The renovation swept out most of the period atmosphere and replaced it with hardwood floors, rain showers, and sculptural lighting. Higher rooms come with private terraces over the city's ornate rooflines, the kind where a coffee and a pastry can quietly derail your morning itinerary.
