The hotel sits over Roman ruins in the Belém neighborhood, and the bones of the building have been put to good use: vaulted ceilings, centuries-old azulejos, and a restaurant domed the way only a former governor's palace can be. Two pools, a spa channeling ancient thermal baths, and rooms tucked under historic beams round things out. The original pastéis de Belém bakery is a few minutes' walk, which is either a selling point or a liability.
