    West Lake has been inspiring poets and emperors for centuries, and the Sofitel sits as close to it as any hotel in the city, with rooftop views that make the argument plainly. The 233 rooms blend Song Dynasty motifs with French flourishes, marble bathrooms, and pillow menus, because someone has to think about these things. An all-day restaurant and a six-room Hangzhou dining pavilion mean you rarely need to leave, which is convenient given the view.
