The black-and-white timbered facade on Hitchin High Street has been some kind of inn since forever, and the front bar still feels like it. The Cock runs as both a pub and a restaurant, with a cooler, clubbier dining room tucked at the back. Modern British cooking, careful rather than showy, and a small converted barn out back for when the occasion demands a room of its own.
