A proper old pub tucked up the alley off Garrick Street, the kind of passage you'd walk past a hundred times without noticing. On warm evenings the narrow lane fills with after-work drinkers spilling out from the bar. The back room was once called the Bucket of Blood, a nickname it earned honestly from the bare-knuckle bouts held there. John Dryden got badly beaten in the alley in 1679; the upstairs room carries his name now, which is a fairly distinguished memorial for a mugging.
