A former Army barracks that the National Park Service converted into a boutique hotel, the Lodge at the Presidio sits on one of the few stretches of near-wild coastline that San Francisco managed to keep inside city limits. Rooms look out over the wooded hillside, the skyline, or the Golden Gate Bridge, depending on how lucky you get at booking. It's a quieter base than downtown, which is either a selling point or a warning.
