Tadao Ando designed this nine-suite boutique hotel in Gion, and the spare timber facade gives nothing away. Inside, tatami mats and shoji screens nod to the ryokan tradition, but the headboards are sycamore-carved, the soaking tubs are cypress wood, and the restaurant menu comes from Jean-Georges Vongerichten. A six-seat bar handles omakase-style cocktails, and there's a terrace when the weather cooperates. The Michelin Guide awarded it two Keys.
