    Six 17th-century canal mansions bolted together make for an unconventional hotel footprint, and the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam leans into it rather than papering it over. Plaques mark which merchant families lived where, the dividing lines between houses are still visible, and the bones of the place feel genuinely domestic. A Forbes Five Star, a Guerlain Spa, an indoor pool, and a personal concierge bring things firmly into the present.
