Wayside Tavern
American
The room seats maybe thirty people and fills up fast, tucked between the West End and Parkside in a spot that looks like a classic neighborhood tavern and then proceeds to serve broiled scallop with caviar and hollandaise. Small plates anchor the menu, the wine list has a point of view, and the cocktails are sharper than the setting lets on. Condé Nast Traveler put it on their Portland list, which surprises no one who's been.

How we scoreThe dishes from the writeups
-
Broiled Maine scallop
“Small plates roll out combinations such as broiled Maine scallop (a single, perfect one) with velvety hollandaise and pops of caviar”
Condé Nast Traveler -
Eggplant terrine
“Ditto the eggplant terrine, velvety and rich with Calabrian chili ricotta—employ your spoon to get every last bit of the tomato sauce.”
Condé Nast Traveler -
Sazerac
“the Sazerac comes laced with apricot”
Condé Nast Traveler -
Steak au poivre
“The steak au poivre, for example—which may seem like a throw-away, but not here, where accompanied by bone marrow and potato puree, it’s a medley as cosseting as the attentive service and cozy room.”
