The best hotels in San Juan, according to the experts: Forbes Travel Guide, Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Condado Vanderbilt Hotel comes out on top.

More Less

Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve and Four Seasons Resort Puerto Rico hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Forbes Travel Guide next.

  1. The Spanish Revival facade on Ashford Avenue has been watching the Atlantic since the Vanderbilt family built it, and the foyer still delivers: ocean visible straight through the lobby the moment the grand doors open. This is a full-scale luxury hotel with three pools, a spa, beach butlers, a tanning specialist (yes, really), and rooms across the historic building and two modern towers, all facing the water. Forbes Four Star.

  2. The open-air arrival pavilion rises over a moat of water lilies with the Atlantic framed behind it, which tells you exactly what kind of resort this is. Fifty beachfront acres, butler service as standard, a spa spread across five acres with treehouse treatment rooms, and every suite facing the ocean with an outdoor shower. José Andrés has a restaurant here. Forbes Five Star. The coqui frogs perform for free.

  3. The rooms have soaring dark cherry beams against white-and-sand walls, private terraces, and marble bathrooms with rainforest showers, giving the whole place the feel of a chic treehouse that happens to border the Caribbean. This Four Seasons resort sits deliberately far from anything, with a cascading pool facing the ocean, a golf course, tennis, a spa, and a spread of restaurants. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

  4. Perched on Condado Beach with an unobstructed view straight out to the Atlantic, this 97-room luxury hotel splits the difference between boutique and full resort, which means a lively pool scene without the stadium-crowd feeling. The white-on-white interiors feel deliberately removed from Old San Juan's colonial palette. Three bars, including a beach bar, keep things moving, and the restaurant, Social, runs from classic Puerto Rican to inventive cocktails. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

  5. Infinity pools connected by waterfalls spill toward a private beach in Condado, but La Concha is less a retreat than a scene. The luxury hotel pulls a stylish San Juan crowd to its casino, sushi restaurant, open-air rum bar, and nightclub, so don't expect silence after dark. Guest rooms run bright and sleek, all floor-to-ceiling windows and retro-white decor, with ocean-facing suites and balconies for those inclined to splurge. Complimentary bikes for Old San Juan are a nice touch.

  6. Fifteen rooms dressed in Mediterranean antiques in a corner of San Juan that otherwise looks like it was finished last Tuesday. O:live is a boutique hotel in Condado with a romantic brief it takes seriously, right down to the peekaboo showers. The rooftop bar has drinks and a view, Bardot handles modern French downstairs, and a no-under-18s policy keeps the whole operation pointed in one direction.

  7. A 1970s Rolls-Royce parked poolside, converted into a champagne bar and DJ booth, tells you immediately what kind of hotel this is. O:LV Fifty Five is an all-suite boutique tower in Condado where the 26 rooms lean gold, white, and marble, and most look out over the lagoon. The rooftop holds a bar, restaurant, pool, and, one floor above that, a lounge for the truly committed. Glossy without apology.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
