The Best Hotels Near Nougier, by the Record

  1. A feudal estate in the Charente that has been around since at least the 1400s and somehow doesn't feel like a museum about it. This five-room country hotel mixes antique furniture and old stone bones with modern comforts and contemporary touches, keeping the whole thing feeling like a borrowed house rather than a heritage site. There's a saltwater pool and tennis, breakfast from the farm, and the town of Confolens with its restaurants a short drive away.

  2. Ivy-covered stone walls and a pair of turrets rise from a hilltop in the Berry countryside, and this boutique château hotel is as composed inside as out: tall bookshelves, oil paintings in gilded frames, fires going, a baby grand in the corner. Guest rooms have parquet floors and family heirlooms, and several open straight onto gardens with a swimming pool. A handful of suites occupy the renovated outbuildings for a bit more privacy.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. It runs on the scored places nearby: more good stuff within reach, higher score. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
