  10. A former café that held court for Arlesians for generations, this twelve-suite boutique hotel was rescued and reimagined by two entrepreneurs with good taste and apparent restraint. Rooms mix antiques with Scandinavian pieces, terrazzo floors, Murano lamps, and kimonos instead of the usual sad robes. The street-level restaurant does chalkboard menus and local wine at wooden tables, and breakfast can come to your door or be taken among the regulars below.

  11. Breakfast under the old cloister arches sets the tone: this is a hotel that takes the Provençal pace seriously. A former Carmelite convent dressed up in Roman imperial style, it lands somewhere between monastic quiet and aristocratic fuss, which turns out to be a comfortable place to land. Rooms around the courtyard come with genuine antiques and heavy local fabrics. There's a pool, a dining room that pulls in Arles locals, and very little that's trying to impress you.

  12. A private mansion tucked into the historic center of Arles, its courtyard so quiet you'd swear the street outside is a rumor. This boutique hotel occupies an old townhouse that's been redecorated in a contemporary style, keeping the romance intact for guests who want history without the museum feel. Rooms are spacious, there's a small spa in the cellar, and breakfast runs considerably more lavish than the word suggests.

  13. Ivy-covered and parked in the middle of actual working ranch land in the Camargue, this farmhouse hotel raises semi-wild long-horned bulls on property and grows the red rice the region is known for. Eight rooms and three suites mix exposed pine beams with soft contemporary colors, the work of a designer in the family. Dinner happens at round tables set inside the kitchen itself, which is either charming or slightly alarming depending on your relationship with open flames.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
