The Best Hotels in Athens, by the Record

The best hotels in Athens, by the professional record: Michelin Guide and Forbes Travel Guide have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. The Dolli at Acropolis comes out on top, and the record runs deepest in Athina and Athens.

Hotel Grande Bretagne and King George, Athens hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Forbes Travel Guide next.

  1. The rooftop infinity pool lines up with the Parthenon close enough to feel like a fever dream. This boutique hotel in a neoclassical Plaka building holds a Michelin 2 Keys and a Forbes Four Star, and both feel earned: high ceilings, oversized windows, marble floors, and rooms where the ancient ruins are visible from the bed. The rooftop restaurant adds a panoramic dining option for anyone who needs more Acropolis with their Mediterranean fare.

  2. A Victorian facade on Syntagma Square, with Acropolis views from the balconies and a rooftop pool that makes a convincing case for never leaving. This grand old luxury hotel has been hosting heads of state and the occasional rock tour for well over a century, and a top-to-bottom restoration brought every oil painting and piece of antique furniture back to full splendor without tipping into museum overload. The Michelin Guide has awarded it 2 Keys.

  3. Murano chandeliers, herringbone floors, and a direct sightline to the Parthenon from Syntagma Square: this 102-room luxury hotel has been one of Athens's more fashionable addresses since it opened. The cream-and-gold rooms have a boutique feel, the walls hang with works by Greek painters, and the neoclassical bones are intact without feeling frozen in time. Voukourestiou Street, the city's main shopping strip, is a short walk away.

  4. A whitewashed Cycladic building clinging to a cliffside a short walk from the chaos of Mykonos Town, Kouros is a 40-room boutique hotel where every room faces the Aegean. The infinity pool bar keeps guests in spritz-fueled suspension above the water, and the spa exists primarily to undo whatever the island's nightlife managed to do. Renovated suites swap the standard all-white for a sharper white-and-black palette with marble throughout.

  5. The Foundry restaurant opens onto a small live music venue, which tells you exactly what kind of hotel this is. Hotel Abacus is a boutique stay in a college town that takes its music scene as seriously as its football, and the place threads that needle with mid-century modern rooms, an in-house grab-and-go café, and enough down-to-earth warmth that neither the Bulldogs fans nor the 40 Watt pilgrims feel out of place.

  6. The original denim mill brickwork and oversized wood beams stayed; the graffiti did not. This boutique hotel in Athens occupies a beautifully salvaged industrial building, where the team layered in hand-laid marble, travertine, and custom metalwork without smothering what was already there. Fifty rooms have full-height windows and botanical tones. Downstairs, the Italian kitchen packs the house on Tuesday nights, which in a college town is its own kind of endorsement.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. It runs on the scored places nearby: more good stuff within reach, higher score. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
