1. Hotel Grande Bretagne

    If you're going to splurge on a hotel in Athens, this is the one. The Grande Bretagne is a grand old luxury institution right on Syntagma Square, and the rooftop pool with its unobstructed Acropolis views does most of the convincing. Rooms are palatial, the spa and bars mean you never have to leave, and yet the Plaka and its tavernas are basically at your feet. The crowd is well-heeled and quietly impressed, which feels about right.
