  2. Two turn-of-the-century brick buildings joined into one hotel, with 18-foot trees growing under a vaulted glass atrium ceiling that blurs the line between indoors and the park outside. The bar in the middle of that atrium is the obvious place to settle, but the all-seasons rooftop has the city view. Guest rooms run to warm wood and deep navy. It's a thoughtful place to sleep in Cincinnati's oldest neighborhood.

  4. A grand Beaux-Arts building with a vaulted lobby and an original staircase that makes you feel slightly underdressed on arrival. The Fidelity is a 165-room hotel in downtown Cincinnati with a Parisian-inflected sensibility, 17 apartment-style suites, and restored terraces that suggest the building has always known it was something. Gwynne handles dinner; Cora's All-Day Café covers everything else. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  5. A century-old building in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, remade into a boutique hotel with enough art on the walls to keep you looking. Kinley is part of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio, which means independent personality with a loyalty card on the side. Rooms are chic and comfortable, the crowd runs young, and the in-house café, bar, and ancient-grains restaurant give the place roots in the neighborhood rather than above it.

  6. Check-in happens at Bar Moxy, which sets the tone: this is a hotel where the lobby is also your first drink. The 111-room property folds a new tower into three renovated Italianate storefronts, and the interiors lean into Cincinnati's German immigrant past with a modern Bavarian twist that stops short of lederhosen. The Chase Rooftop Bar sits above it all with skyline views, and Great American Ball Park is practically next door.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
