The Best Places to Drink and Do in Hungary

The best places to drink and do in Hungary, according to the experts: The 50 and Difford's Guide have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Tokaj-Hétszőlő Organic Wineyards comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Budapest and Mád.

More Less

Tokaj Disznókő and Hide hold the next two places. The 50 shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Difford's Guide next.

  1. Perched on the slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, this historic Tokaj estate is one of the region's essential vineyard visits, known for dry mineral whites and the legendary sweet Tokaji Aszú. The wild-boar rock at the vineyard's heart gives its name to the estate and, from the belvedere at its summit, views sweep across the Great Hungarian Plain toward a horizon that genuinely seems to have no end. A named Discovery on the World's 50 Best Vineyards list.

  3. Rank 4. Black Swan

    Cocktail Bar

An unmarked door on Klauzál utca is the only hint a cocktail bar is back there, and the 1920s-ish marble and copper interior suggests someone took the speakeasy aesthetic pretty seriously. Black Swan is an upmarket cocktail bar with a menu rooted in Hungarian ingredients and technique, which is a more interesting premise than the decor-as-personality alone. The 50 Discovery list has noted it among its picks.

  4. Rank 4. Elysian

    Seasonal Eastern European

A cocktail bar in central Pest that opens with a floor-to-ceiling abstract mural behind Scandi pendant lights, blue booths, and wooden floors, which is a pointed statement in a city that built its nightlife reputation on artful ruin. The team ferments, refines, and ages Hungarian ingredients, and runs a zero-waste operation while doing it. The 50 Discovery recognized it. Budapest still has its ruin bars; this is what comes after them.

  5. Rank 4. Múzsa

    Japanese

The lobby bar of the Four Seasons Gresham Palace, Múzsa leans hard into the Art Nouveau bones of the building, the kind of room that makes first-time visitors stop walking. The cocktail list runs to nine signatures, each built around local Hungarian ingredients with a quietly technical hand. Small sharing plates drift toward Japanese-Hungarian fusion if you want something to eat. A beautiful place to feel like someone briefly glamorous.

  7. The Oremus vineyard is where Tokaj's legendary Aszú wines were first made centuries ago, and this winery still draws from those same plots. A visit here means tasting both the classic sweet wines that made the region famous and the dry Furmint and Hárslevelü bottles the team has been quietly refining alongside them. It earned a spot on The 50 Discovery list, which tracks wine destinations worth a detour.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
