  2. Rank 3. Chenin

    Wine Bar

Chenin is a tiny wine bar tucked inside The Siren Hotel, pouring natural and biodynamic bottles to a room lit softly enough to forgive anyone's skin-contact experiments. Salty snacks and a mortadella sandwich piled onto focaccia keep the evening going longer than planned. Seats are scarce, so arrive when the doors open. It was a James Beard Award nominee for Best New Bar.

  4. Shinola, the brand that sells you a handsome watch and a bicycle you'll never ride, also runs this downtown Detroit hotel, and it lands with the Michelin Guide's one Key designation. The rooms carry the same crafted-in-America aesthetic the brand trades on, and the address on Woodward puts you squarely in a neighborhood that has visibly decided it isn't done yet. A stay here feels less like a hotel booking and more like a small wager on the city.

  5. A lobby full of playful, colorful sculpture and paintings keeps the black marble and dark wood from taking themselves too seriously at this luxury boutique hotel in Birmingham, the upscale suburb just outside Detroit. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Key. It's the kind of boldly designed, art-forward property that once belonged only to bigger cities, now quietly doing its thing in a leafy Michigan suburb.

  7. The terra cotta atrium under a massive skylight is the first thing that stops you in this downtown Detroit hotel, which has been around forever and knows it. Rooms run to tall windows and high ceilings, the bones of a grand old skyscraper kept largely intact through a careful restoration. It sits right where downtown meets Midtown, so the theaters, stadiums, and galleries are all on foot.

  8. Apartments with a washer/dryer and live plants in every unit, inside the landmarked Book Tower. ROOST is an extended-stay boutique hotel where the studios and one- or two-bedroom suites run closer to a furnished apartment than a standard room, with full kitchens and a bikes-to-borrow program. Dogs are welcome, and when cooking feels like too much, the building's own restaurant options are right downstairs.

  10. The bones here are Albert Kahn's old Art Deco Walker-Roehrig Building, once home to WWJ radio, now a boutique hotel where the heritage stops at the lobby threshold and the rooms go full contemporary. Suites run generous by city-center standards, and the building's second act includes Cibo Detroit for dinner, the Beve cocktail bar for something swanky, and a rooftop terrace when the weather cooperates.

  12. A converted Holiday Inn in Corktown where the exposed conduit and polished concrete aren't a design oversight but the whole point. The 144 rooms pair that industrial shell with custom furnishings from local artisans, keeping things clean-lined without feeling spare. Batch Brewing pours at the bar, Detroit Bikes handles the rentals, and the courtyard runs a beer garden and live music when the weather cooperates. A hotel that leans hard into Detroit's comeback narrative, and Corktown is a fine neighborhood to make that argument from.

  13. Original marble fireplaces, Ford family archives, and a signed note from Walt Disney in the lobby set the tone at this historic hotel on the edge of Dearborn. Rooms are stately and well-kept, and the bar named for Ford's road-trip companions, Edison and Firestone among them, is a genuinely good excuse to stay for one more drink. It's the kind of hotel that takes its own story seriously, which turns out to be more interesting than most.

  14. A luxury hotel in Birmingham, Michigan that feels like it has been around forever, even though it hasn't. The Townsend pulls off a particular trick: the kind of hushed, buttoned-up grandeur that usually takes generations to accumulate. It's the sort of place where the staff remembers your name and the decor has never once considered being trendy. A solid base for exploring Detroit's suburbs without roughing it.

  16. Rank 20. Castalia

    Cocktail Bar

At five o'clock on the dot, a perfume shop inside a Victorian mansion in Midtown folds itself into an 18-seat cocktail bar. Castalia is built around the idea that smell and taste are basically the same argument, pairing its seasonal experimental cocktails with scents from its sister perfume house. The room holds fewer people than a dinner party, which tends to focus everyone's attention on what's in the glass.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
