The best resorts in Hangzhou, according to the experts: Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Banyan Tree Hangzhou comes out on top.

Stay, change section
  1. Seventy-two ivory-walled villas arranged like a private village along canals and ponds, this all-villa resort sits in a misty wetlands preserve outside the city proper. Dark lacquered furniture and silk brocades share space with fireplaces, enormous bathrooms, and the Banyan Tree's signature spa, here set against bamboo groves. A hand-rowed boat through the wetlands, stopping at pagodas and a teahouse for Longjin tea, is a reasonable way to spend a morning.

  2. A resort on a peninsula jutting into Qiandao Lake, where the view from your room is a thousand forested islands and distant peaks doing their best ink-wash painting impression. The 264 rooms lean modern-traditional but quietly, so nothing competes with the windows. Bathrooms run to rain showers and separate tubs, and there's a nine-treatment-room spa with indoor and outdoor pools for when the scenery alone feels insufficient.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
