The 100 Best Places to Eat in Minneapolis

Sections

Tap another section to add it.

The best places to eat in Minneapolis, according to the experts: AAA, Food & Wine, and James Beard Awards have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Myriel comes out on top.

More Less

Diane’s Place and Bûcheron hold the next two places. Minnesota Monthly shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA close behind.

  1. Karyn Tomlinson won a James Beard Award for the cooking she does here, which should tell you something. Myriel is a small-plates tasting spot in St. Paul where the menu changes often enough that nothing is posted online, which forces a pleasant kind of surrender. The room runs cream and sand with European bones, cozy but pulled-together. Tomlinson is also known for her pastry work, so if apple pie is on that night, the answer is yes.

  2. A traditional Hmong cross-stitch pattern meaning "home" runs through the whole room, which tells you exactly what Diane Moua is going for. The neighborhood restaurant inside Minneapolis' Food Building blends Hmong-American cooking with a serious pastry program, and the two halves genuinely need each other. Food & Wine named it Restaurant of the Year, and it landed on the New York Times Restaurant List. The sesame balls have their own fan club.

  3. The menu cites lumberjacks as inspiration, which sounds like a joke until the food arrives smelling of juniper and pickled elderberries. This is a French American neighborhood restaurant on Nicollet, where the chef works a distinctly Upper Midwestern palate, finding fall vegetables worthy of a special occasion without making the room feel like one. It won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant and landed on the New York Times Restaurant List. The pommes dauphine are, regulars will tell you, really just very good Tater Tots.

  4. Deep teal walls, hanging ferns, and paper lanterns turned a former strip club into a Southeast Asian street food restaurant that somehow feels like the right call even in a Minneapolis winter. The cocktails lean tropical, the menu ranges across Vietnam, Bali, and beyond, and the chef behind it all, Christina Nguyen, took the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest. Book on Resy; walk-ins are optimistic.

  6. Rank 5. Vinai

    Hmong Thai

Named for the Thai refugee camp where chef Yia Vang was born, Vinai is a Hmong restaurant that brings a cuisine most Minneapolis diners have never properly encountered. The menu runs from Hill Tribe chicken to grilled lamb heart, and the hot sauces come from family recipes. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and Bon Appétit named it among America's best new restaurants. Every dish has a story, and Vang is usually around to tell it.

  8. Rank 8. Nixta

  9. Rank 8. Spoon and Stable

    Modern French

The building was a working stable once, and the vaulted ceilings and warm brick still carry that memory into what is now one of Minneapolis's most celebrated dinner destinations. Chef Gavin Kaysen runs a Midwestern French kitchen where the seasonal sourcing is taken seriously without being announced at you. A 2025 James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist, it draws a dressed-up but not stiff crowd happy to linger over heritage grain pasta and a very good cocktail.

  10. Rank 11. Kado no Mise

    Edo-style Sushi

Twelve counter seats and a reservation on Tock are your entry points to this North Loop omakase spot, where the chef plates Edo-style sushi and seasonal small dishes in a room stripped down to near-silence. The minimalist space is deliberate, meant to keep your focus exactly where he wants it. The chef was a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Midwest in 2026, which tracks with the precision on the plate.

  11. Three kinds of larb on the menu signals where Gai Noi's heart is. Ann Ahmed's fast-casual Thai-Lao restaurant in Minneapolis draws from the Lao city of Luang Prabang, so the menu runs toward khao poon gai, banana-leaf-steamed whitefish, and four versions of jeow, the spicy Lao dipping sauce. It's the looser, louder sibling to Ahmed's more formal Khâluna, the kind of place where you order generously and don't overthink it. The New York Times put it on their 2023 restaurant list.

  13. The focaccia is baked in-house, which explains why the bread alone prompts takeaway orders. Marty's is a neighborhood sandwich shop in Northeast Minneapolis that spent a couple of years as a pop-up before finding a permanent home, and the menu still has that carefully considered quality. Chicken salad, a BLT with local bacon, a salami and prosciutto situation with fennel slaw. The breakfast sandwich stacked with hash browns has developed its own following.

  26. Vegetables get top billing here, but the duck confit is quietly on the menu for anyone who needs convincing. All Saints is a casual-ish dinner spot where the kitchen coaxes produce into the kind of food you order twice, and the cocktail program runs from raspberry spritzes to zero-proof drinks that don't taste like an afterthought. The former Bardo space on Hennepin feels lived-in and easy, the sort of room that doesn't announce its ambitions.

  28. Fried green plantains stuffed with cheese and paired with a sharply herbed aji criollo set the tone at this cheerful Ecuadorian and Andean neighborhood restaurant on Central Avenue. The kitchen runs seven days a week, which is convenient when you need a proper seco de pollo on a Tuesday. An old-school institution in the best sense, the kind of place where the regulars have strong opinions about the brunch menu and are not shy about sharing them.

  31. Twenty seats, one turn per night, and a tasting menu that changes with whatever the season insists on. Demi is Gavin Kaysen's intimate counter restaurant, a deliberately small operation that sits in the shadow of his better-known Spoon and Stable nearby. The room is close enough that you can watch the kitchen work through every course, which is either thrilling or slightly stressful depending on your personality.

  32. A sprawling Mexican market and restaurant that has been an old-school institution on Cesar Chavez Street, El Burrito Mercado runs a full deli and bakery alongside a proper sit-down kitchen. The family has been at it for generations, and the mole con pollo and birria tacos carry that kind of quiet confidence. The bakery cases alone, stacked with barbacoa and fresh conchas, make it hard to leave without your arms full.

  34. The Jucy Lucy, spelled without the "i" and stuffed with molten cheese between two beef patties, is the whole reason Matt's Bar exists and possibly the whole reason Minneapolis exists. This divey neighborhood bar on Cedar Avenue has been doing exactly one thing forever, and the pleather booths and unadorned bar haven't changed to accommodate anyone, including a former president who stopped in. Order the burger, wait for the cheese to cool slightly, and learn from whoever's nearby why the spelling matters.

  38. A falafel banh mi or hummus topped with kimchi sounds like a fever dream until you're eating it and it makes complete sense. This casual counter-service spot on Lyndale blends global pantries without apology, and the Moroccan-spiced fried chicken stuffed into a cheddar scallion biscuit is the kind of menu item that shouldn't work on paper. Order at the counter, grab a seat, and walk next door to Milkjam Creamery when the mood calls for it.

  47. Jicama ribs that read as meat are the talking point at this Vietnamese sit-down in Saint Paul, where chef Eric Pham opened his first restaurant as a tribute to his mother, a longtime figure at the family's Minneapolis institution Quang. Most plates land at $21 or under, and the menu runs from bún chay to a crispy chicken sandwich without any of it feeling like a compromise. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List in 2026.

  61. A neighborhood bar and grill housed in a refurbished firehouse in St. Paul's West Seventh corridor, which gives the room more bones than most places trying to cultivate a "local watering hole" feeling. The menu runs American comfort, with a French onion steak sandwich doing a lot of the heavy lifting alongside a burger that locals seem to take personally. The bar handles cocktails, mocktails, and coffee drinks without making you feel like you have to pick a lane.

  68. Coastal American food inside a Galleria shopping mall is a proposition that sounds like a dare, but the cocktail list alone gives this casual dinner spot some credibility. The signature Old Fashioned and an espresso martini anchor a wide beverage menu, and the room catches the sunset at exactly the right angle. Boutique retail is a few steps away, which explains the after-shopping crowd settling in for something more than a snack.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
