The Best Places in Downtown Coral Gables

  1. Rank 1. Shingo

    Sushi

The sharp smell of vinegar hitting the air signals the start of service at this 14-seat omakase counter in Coral Gables, where chef Shingo Akikuni holds a Michelin star. Fish comes almost entirely from Japan, each piece dressed with little more than a swipe of nikiri. Fourteen seats sounds intimate until you notice the team switching sides mid-meal without missing a beat, running the room like it's half the size.

  2. Dim sum from a chef who treats borders as loose suggestions, set inside a ground-floor office building in Coral Gables that looks like it should house a dentist. The dumplings started as a pop-up and earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod before finding a permanent home here. The cooking pulls from China, Japan, and Italy in the same breath, and somehow it coheres. A Niman Ranch short rib filling alongside charred cabbage in chili butter will tell you more than any summary.

  3. The café con leche here is made with a lighter roast, which in Miami is practically a political statement. Tinta y Café is a Cuban sandwich and coffee shop in Coral Gables where the second-generation team bakes its own baguettes, folds French eggs into the breakfast sandwiches, and stuffs the Madurito with roasted pork, chorizo, and sweet plantains. The New York Times put it on their Miami restaurant list, which the regulars probably shrug at between sips.

  5. An arch of roses at the door signals exactly the kind of bakery this is: one where the pastries look almost too considered to eat. Antonio Bachour's Coral Gables shop holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the counter seats face a glass-enclosed kitchen where those famously ornate croissants and tarts take shape. There's savory food too, but everyone here has already mentally committed to dessert before they've sat down.

  6. Giorgio Rapicavoli, the Chopped champion behind several Miami spots, set up this cozy osteria on Giralda Avenue's pedestrian strip in Coral Gables. The menu leans into Italian classics with playful detours: pasta al limone with pistachios, a tuna caprese built on local stracciatella, and a dish named after Stanley Tucci that the man himself would presumably approve of. The aperitifs get the same inventive treatment as the food.

  7. A dozen warm wood chairs at a blonde counter in Coral Gables is where the chef's Japanese and Filipino heritage quietly collide. This intimate omakase pulls you through a procession of snacks, sushi, and small surprises, including a Kumamoto oyster served in a dashi "shell" and madai sliced to resemble a rose. The meal closes on miso ice cream, which sounds like a twist but feels inevitable by the time it arrives.

  8. Frankie & Wally's is a Coral Gables sandwich shop where the cold cuts are shaved so thin they nearly vanish, and the shredded lettuce is there to soak up the oil and vinegar before the bread can. A Padrino has more layers of mortadella, salami, and ham than anyone will count. It's a counter-service, no-dress-code lunch, and the line knows this. Miami has plenty of hot pressed sandwiches, so this one's the cold, quiet exception.

  11. Carbonara croquetas dusted with cured egg yolk tell you everything about what Michelle Bernstein is doing at her first restaurant with her name on the door in nearly a decade. It's a Spanish-Mediterranean dinner spot in Coral Gables where the menu traces her life, from a Jewish Argentine upbringing to time spent cooking with grandmothers across Spain, Morocco, and Hungary. The result is personal in a way that most "globally inspired" menus only pretend to be.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
