    British Steakhouse

The British steakhouse import near Gramercy that made New York carnivores feel slightly underdressed. The room leans into a warm, vintage-century-club atmosphere, and the menu runs from serious cuts to the kind of British comfort food that sneaks up on you. The bar program is no afterthought, landing a regional Spirited Award and a James Beard semifinalist nod for beverages. A New York Times Critic's Pick, and reliably easier to love than the places that take themselves more seriously.

  61. The Beaux-Arts bones alone justify a slow lap through the lobby. The Ned NoMad is a hotel that takes socializing as seriously as sleep, with guests getting access to members-only spaces including a whimsically muraled downstairs club. NoMad puts the Empire State Building and Madison Square Park in easy walking range while Downtown stays close enough for a late night. The kind of place where you feel like you're in on something, even as a tourist.

  64. The sister property to a London hotel and private club, The Twenty Two New York occupies the restored Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt house near Union Square. It holds a Michelin Key. The vibe is international modern luxury with enough Gilded Age bones in the building to keep things grounded, which is a neat trick for a place that could easily have leaned into its British pedigree and called it a day.

  70. Check-in happens on the fourth floor of a glass tower, no credit card demanded at the door, just a welcome drink and a cool towel while your bags disappear ahead of you. It's a luxury hotel one block from the Jersey Shore, and it reads more like a borrowed beach house than a property, with plush settees, fireplaces, and coffee table books stacked just so. Manhattan is 75 minutes away, which the crowd seems to regard as a selling point rather than a commute. Michelin awarded it a Key.

    Mexican

The Jell-O of the day changes, but the wobbly whimsy is a constant at this Ridgewood bar turned Mexican restaurant from chef Yara Herrera. Reggaeton and mariachi set the mood while the menu moves between bar snacks and fine-dining technique, the same kitchen handling both with ease. The New York Times named it among New York's best new restaurants in 2025, which feels about right for a place this hard to categorize.

  77. The ceiling is covered in thousands of clay churchwarden pipes, each one claimed by a regular who never came back to collect it. Keens is an old-school Manhattan steakhouse in Midtown, all dark wood and white tablecloths, and the mutton chop alone has landed on the New York Times list of the city's defining dishes. The porterhouse is USDA Prime, dry-aged in-house, and broiled without apology. It sits at number 68 on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

    Cocktail Bar

A Harlem cocktail bar run by artists, which explains why the drinks feel less like menu items and more like installation pieces. The house forager supplies wild edible plants that become bitters, liqueurs, and amari made in-house, so what ends up in your glass has a provenance most bars can't claim. The room is cozy and unhurried, and the crowd tends to treat the cocktail list the way other people treat gallery notes.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
