    A 17th-century palazzo at the top of Republic Street, painstakingly restored so the frescoed ceilings and stone archways read like originals, because they are. This small luxury hotel earns its Michelin Key; rooms trade period grandeur for underfloor heating and double-glazed windows without apology, and the terrace sweeps from the city gates to the old Royal Opera House. The in-house restaurant, Mezzodi, runs Italian all day for guests who can't face leaving.
