Checkerboard tablecloths and divey walls set the scene at this beloved fried chicken shop, where the bird arrives hand-battered and properly spicy. Memphis is barbecue country, and Gus's seems fine with the argument. Sides run to okra, beans, and mac and cheese, and a half-dozen pies baked daily close things out. The Front Street location is the one for anyone staying downtown.
