A 17th-century mint building right on La Rochelle's Vieux Port, La Monnaie is a boutique hotel that takes the contrast between old stone walls and aggressively contemporary interiors very seriously. Vibrant colors, design furniture, and an actual art collection fill the rooms. The spa is compact but functional, the bar serves a light menu indoors and out, and there's no restaurant, which the neighborhood's waterfront dining scene makes easy to forgive.
