The focaccia comes from Liguria Bakery down the street and goes into a small oven behind the bar, where the staff arrange sandwiches with a pizza peel like a game of Tetris. This old North Beach cafe has been around forever, its walls dense with sunwashed photos and Italian art. Order the meatball on focaccia and take a table by the window, where Washington Square gives the whole thing the feeling of a city that still knows how to sit still.
