A geometric facade cuts against the slightly ramshackle streetscape a short walk from Nijo Castle, which is about as good a symbol as you'll get for what this hotel is doing. Rakuro is a modern property with rooms that mix Western, hybrid, and tatami layouts, all rendered in natural materials through a decidedly contemporary eye. The Michelin Guide has it in their selected hotels, and it earns that nod without trying to be old Kyoto.
