The rococo plasterwork spiraling through the lobby feels like a baroque fever dream squeezed inside a red-brick Westminster hotel. St. Ermin's has a covert past to match: Churchill's Special Operations Executive ran clandestine operations from one of the upper floors, MI6 set up here too, and a rumored tunnel still connects the building to the Palace of Westminster. The velvet Chesterfields and collection of teapots make it all feel very civilized, which was presumably the point.
