A pub sitting in the middle of nowhere on the Cornish coast, surrounded by fields and sheep with the Atlantic just over the hill. The team forages hogweed and Japanese knotweed from nearby hedgerows, which sounds alarming until the plate arrives and makes complete sense. Fires burn, the décor is cheerfully worn-in, and the seafood stays simple enough to let a fresh sole fillet speak for itself. Bedrooms upstairs if you'd rather not drive those lanes at night.

    The dishes from the writeups

    • St. Austell Bay mussels

    • Crab, tomato & basil salad

“Diners seeking to enjoy a taste of the coast could also try a Crab, tomato & basil salad with sourdough”

      Top 50 Gastropubs, 2026
    • Half lobster

“Lunchtime diners can enjoy dishes such as hake, cucumber, dill and mussels or half lobster served with garlic butter, alongside new potatoes and aioli”

      Top 50 Gastropubs, 2026
    • Megrim sole

“The unfussy, classically based dishes are all the better for their simplicity; if the chefs have got a fresh, sweet fillet of megrim sole, for example, then they wisely don't get in the way of its natural flavours.”

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
