    A heated rooftop pool looking straight out over the Royal Palace gives you a sense of how W Amsterdam sets its sights. The hotel splits across two heritage buildings, one a former telephone exchange, the other a century-old bank, and the contrast holds inside too: the Exchange side runs lively and social, while the Bank building leans quieter and more indulgent, with a spa and a detox bar for guests who mean business about doing nothing.
