A Victorian brick water tower, once the tallest in Europe, converted into a luxury hotel in Cologne's Kaygasse park. The circular footprint means no room is quite square, and the interiors, shaped by the late Andrée Putman's Parisian, faintly Deco hand, make warmth out of what could have been an industrial cold shoulder. Bar Botanik on the roof does cocktails with a full 360-degree sweep of the city, which is a reasonable trade for altitude.
