The best resorts in Queenstown, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Stoneridge Estate comes out on top.

Gibbston Valley Lodge and Spa and Sherwood Queenstown hold the next two places.

  1. Stone walls, arched windows, and a homestead that's been around forever anchor this lodge near Queenstown, where a local family spent decades turning a sheep paddock into something that reads more like a European château than rural New Zealand. Suites and cottages open onto formal gardens with the Remarkables behind them, and a chapel, wine cellar, and hot tubs fill in whatever gaps the scenery leaves. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  4. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Shotover River and the Remarkables from every room at this five-star resort perched above Arthurs Point, just outside Queenstown. Rattan lights and timber headboards keep things grounded while the landscape does the decorating. The on-site bar and restaurant runs breakfast through dinner using local ingredients with that same panorama behind every meal. Coronet Peak is close enough to build a ski day around, and the spa is there when you've had enough of both.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
