The best places to drink and stay in St. Louis, according to the experts: AAA, Forbes Travel Guide, and Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Saint Louis.
More Less
Blue Jay Brewing and Four Seasons St. Louis hold the next two places. AAA shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide next.

Most of the rooms have private balconies looking out over Forest Park and the Clayton skyline, which softens the blow of checking in somewhere this polished. This is a full-service luxury hotel in the quiet, gallery-and-garden suburb of Clayton, a short ride from the city proper. A spa, a fitness center with panoramic views, and two restaurants round things out. It holds a Forbes Four Star.

Views of the Gateway Arch from a good chunk of the rooms set the tone at this luxury hotel sitting right on the Mississippi. The modern building and contemporary interiors read less "chain hotel sameness" than you might expect from a Four Seasons, and the spa and fitness center are suitably extensive. Gerard Craft, a James Beard Award winner, runs Cinder House downstairs, which keeps guests from having to venture far for a serious meal.

The name comes from the wooden forms shoemakers use to shape shoes, which tells you something about this old Garment District building and the people who thought carefully about what to do with it. It's a boutique hotel with an industrial-chic aesthetic, rooms that lean Bauhaus and Art Deco, and a rooftop pool bar that feels like a bigger deal in St. Louis than it would in warmer latitudes, which is probably why everyone ends up there.

Some rooms look directly across the street at the face of Busch Stadium, which tells you exactly who books this hotel and how they feel about the Cardinals. Live! by Loews is a contemporary boutique hotel planted in the middle of Ballpark Village, St. Louis's stadium-anchored entertainment district. Rooms are bright and colorful, with Stearns & Foster mattresses. Two restaurants and a bourbon bar handle most needs, and the rest of the district handles the others.

Rank 74. Au Cheval Bar and Diner
American
The bar at Au Cheval is the part of the diner you can sit at without a two-hour wait, assuming the wait stays tolerable, and the whole place runs on dim lighting, a cocktail list, and the knowledge that a griddled burger with a fried egg is coming either way. It's a moody, no-frills diner-bar, and the cocktails do real work while you stare at the people who got the table. Difford's Guide gives it four stars.
