The best places to drink and stay in Avignon, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and Le Fooding have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. La Mirande comes out on top.
More Less
Le vin devant soi and Le Prieuré hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Le Fooding next.

Rooms at this 26-room hotel look directly onto the Palais des Papes, which is either deeply atmospheric or a constant reminder that the neighbors have better architecture. Hand-printed fabrics line the walls, oak parquet runs underfoot, and the antiques feel lived-in rather than roped off. The restaurant runs cooking classes in a kitchen that looks like a period film set. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

Ivy climbs the stone walls of a 14th-century priory that has been a hotel since the mid-20th century, sitting quietly in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon just across the Rhône from Avignon itself. Older rooms inside the priory lean traditional; annex suites trade some of that atmosphere for balconies over the courtyard pool. The restaurant serves regional Provençal food under medieval arches, or outside in summer. A Michelin Key hotel, and a convincing argument for doing absolutely nothing, beautifully.

The largest private garden in Avignon hides behind this five-suite boutique hotel, and it comes with a jacuzzi, a pool, and a spa tucked into a garden folly, which is not what you expect from a place this small. The suites are eclectic and richly colored, each one different, and the salons are hung with hundreds of historical images of Avignon once held by the Papal Palace. Personal service is the whole point at this scale, and the orangery seats private dinners of up to ten.

A 17th-century farmhouse on the Île de la Barthelasse, the sliver of countryside that splits the Rhône just outside Avignon's old walls. This small boutique hotel keeps the period stonework intact while the five rooms lean into a focused, uncluttered modernity. The pool and pétanque court do a lot of heavy lifting on slow afternoons, and the kitchen sends out tapas alongside the house cocktails when you can't face moving far.
