From the cafe steps you can see the Atlantic Ocean, which feels about right for a place that's been around forever and has no intention of changing. Steve-O-Reno's is an artsy, cozy coffee shop on the edge of downtown Halifax, pulling cappuccinos and macchiatos from Nova Scotia beans alongside a brunch menu that runs to fish chowder and Montreal bagels with lox. Java Blend has been roasting its own beans in Halifax's North End forever, and the cafe wears that history without making a fuss about it. The menu runs from single-origin drip to flat whites, in sizes from a sensible 8oz all the way to a 20oz option that suggests a very long commute. Somehow it manages to feel equally at home to the pour-over crowd and everyone who just wants a large coffee, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

A takeout window tucked into a North End grocery store, Espresso 46 is easy to miss and hard to forget. The owner moved from Italy with a mission: proper espresso culture, full stop, no filter coffee in sight. The house roastery supplies everything on the menu, and in summer the parking lot becomes a patio where locals caffeinate after their grocery run, which is convenient given the shared lease.
