The best dive bars in the United Kingdom, according to the experts: The Pinnacle Guide, Difford's Guide, and the Top 50 Cocktail Bars have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Murder Inc. comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in London and Edinburgh.
More Less
The Birdcage and The Whip at The Running Horse hold the next two places. Difford's Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Pinnacle Guide next.
-
Rank 1. Murder Inc.
Dive Bar
Neon red signs glow against the brick walls of this Soho dive bar tucked down a backstreet off Tottenham Court Road, and the name is the only thing scary about it. The team behind the Cocktail Trading Company runs the room, keeping cocktails at £11 and deliberately un-fussy while landing something that feels like beauty and filth in quiet agreement. Sick tunes, a pet piñata, and no pretension anywhere in sight.

Rank 2. The Birdcage
Dive Bar
The Sunday flower market on Columbia Road starts right at The Birdcage's corner, which means this old East End pub spent years famous almost entirely for its postcode. Gentrification caught up with the street eventually, and the surrounding restaurants and bars have turned it into a nightly destination rather than a once-a-week pitstop. A proper neighbourhood pub, worn in the right ways, with a crowd that arrived before the area did.

Rank 4. Admiral Codrington
Dive Bar
A big central island counter, worn banquettes, dark panelling, and naval prints on the walls: this Chelsea pub reads like someone described a proper London boozer from memory and then built it. Tucked away on a quiet side street off the Brompton Road, it draws the kind of locals who come for the chat, not the Insta moment. The covered tables outside are never quite sunny enough, yet somehow always full.

Dive Bar
A split-level neighbourhood bar on Hackney Road, named for the man who burned the previous building down in 1883 after being refused entry. Arson as branding is an interesting choice, but it works. What was most recently a curry house is now a late-night drinking spot filling a gap in an area that wasn't exactly drowning in options, a short walk from Columbia Road.

The corridor just inside the front door is lined with framed glowing reviews, which is either very confident or very self-aware, and at The Lord Clifden it's probably both. This Jewellery Quarter pub has Banksy prints, exposed brick, beautiful wood panelling, and an enormous beer garden out back. The bar straddles two rooms and the whole thing has the unhurried feel of a proper British boozer. Ale, scampi fries, pub grub.

The old Packman table in the corner sets the tone for this deliberately scruffy pub near London Bridge. Garishly painted booths, mismatched furniture, and a live music stage draw trainee medics from Guy's Hospital and anyone else who'd rather not be somewhere with a dress code. Gourmet hotdogs made with Bermondsey sausages are the kitchen's one serious move. A proper boozer wearing its rough edges without apology.

Rank 10. Apples and Pears
Dive Bar
Cockney rhyming slang gives this Brick Lane-area bar its name, which means "stairs" for anyone not raised within earshot of Bow Bells. Inside, green pendant lights hang against exposed London brick, the armchairs are comfortably battered, and the terrace out back is about as no-frills as it gets. A second bar downstairs opens when the weekend crowd warrants it. The whole place wears its East End scruffiness without apology.

Dive Bar
On a quiet side street off Borough High Street, this tiny pub fits a six-piece band and their gear into what is essentially a large sitting room, which tells you most of what you need to know. The 70s kitsch ground floor hosts live gigs on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, drawing a friendly mix of locals and music obsessives. Cosy is an understatement, but the intimacy is the point.

Half-height net curtains are doing a lot of heavy lifting here, softening what is otherwise an unvarnished backstreet pub with bare boards, worn rugs, and old wooden furniture. The lounge and saloon are still split by an island bar, and regulars skip the vestibule by cutting behind it, which nobody bothers to object to. A proper ale-and-grievances sort of place, and all the better for it.

The pub sign pictures a man who turns out to be a Coptic Orthodox saint credited with moving a mountain in Cairo, not a local drunk with leather-stained hands, which sets the tone nicely. This is a small, unpretentious neighborhood boozer in Bermondsey, mismatched dark wood furniture and all, the kind of place that quietly resisted any pressure to become somewhere clever.

Dive Bar
A "teuchter" is mildly rude Scottish slang for a country bumpkin, which tells you something about the place's sense of humor. This traditional Edinburgh pub runs on whisky, rugby, and football, with chunky wooden beams, leather sofas, and the kind of lived-in warmth that makes you stay for one more. When a match is on, getting through the door requires genuine optimism.

British Dive Bar
The Antelope has two front doors, a relic of the days when Belgravia's butlers and their employers each needed their own entrance. The partitions are long gone, but the old-school pub atmosphere survives in this quietly gentlemanly corner local just off Sloane Square. Regulars treat it like a sitting room they don't have to dust. Stone's throw from the King's Road, it reads as a place where nobody is trying very hard, which in this postcode takes considerable effort.

British Dive Bar
The original chandeliers and carved dark wood at this grand Victorian pub on Mount Street have outlasted every trend that's swept through Mayfair around them. Red leather banquettes, a floral carpet, and a long bar counter split between two distinct rooms make it feel less like a gastropub makeover and more like somewhere the Duke of Westminster himself might have nursed a pint. The red-brick and terracotta frontage alone stops people on the pavement.

Dive Bar
The Basement is exactly what it says, an underground dive bar on Broughton Street that trades on the fact that Edinburgh sunshine is, statistically, more of a rumor than a given. Their own website takes a cheerful shot at the wicker-furniture crowd, and the regulars seem to agree, keeping the place full even on the rare days when it isn't needed. Dark, atmospheric, and aggressively unpretentious.

Dive Bar
A stripped-back Kingsland Road pub with live jazz and zero posturing, which is a rarer combination than it should be. One big open room on the ground floor, a terrace for smokers, and a crowd young enough to keep the energy up even on a slow Tuesday. Weekends get properly heaving. It wasn't always a traditional boozer, but it plays the part well enough that nobody seems to mind.

Dive Bar
A big Victorian corner pub across from the Imperial War Museum, with stained glass dark enough to make afternoon feel like closing time. The cask ale selection is solid if unremarkable, and the food reputation that once drew people in walked out the door with the chef who built it. Come for the atmosphere and a pint, not a dining occasion, and you'll leave in better shape than if you'd expected otherwise.

Patterned carpets and stained glass windows set the tone at this old-school Birmingham pub, which somehow survived the gastropub wave with its character intact. It's a proper boozer on John Bright Street, with a ground-floor bar that feels genuinely lived-in and an upstairs lounge where the programming swings between stand-up comedy, poetry nights, and touring bands depending on the week.
