Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. Rank 1. El Gallo Altanero

    Mexican Cocktail Bar

  2. Rank 2. Mecenas

    Cocktail Bar

A former parking garage turned stuccoed cocktail bar, Mecenas lands at number 18 on North America's 50 Best Bars list. The name nods to the Roman arts patron, and the ethos follows: everything here is made with care, from spirits to reductions brewed in-house. Liqueurs follow Jalisco's tradition of cane alcohol distillation, with neutral cane spirit as the base for things like limoncello and lavender cream.

  3. Rank 3. De La O

    Mexican Cocktail Bar

  4. Sitting directly across from the Guadalajara Country Club golf course with Punto Sao Paulo shopping next door, this full-service luxury hotel plants you in the city's financial district with everything in reach. A lobby espresso bar, a full-service spa and gym, and an alfresco bar with fire pits handle the range from road warriors to weekend wanderers. The in-house restaurant turns out modern Mexican when you'd rather not go looking for dinner.

  5. The rooftop pool sits above the Zona Minerva treetops, which tells you something about the priorities here. Casa Habita is a 37-room boutique hotel from Grupo Habita, the Mexican mini-chain that has a habit of making everywhere else look fussy. Rooms go spare and geometric, all marble bathrooms and Mondrian-ish sliding glass, with materials sourced from Jalisco. The cocktail bar draws locals, which is usually the sign worth trusting.

  7. The name translates as "end your suffering," which sets the tone pretty well for a mezcal bar stocking more than 70 varieties. The founder is a documentary filmmaker and mezcal industry organizer, so this is less a bar than a small education in smoke. Pechuga, made with chicken breast and tasting nothing like it sounds, is worth asking about. Named a Discovery by The 50, it draws the kind of regulars who actually want to talk about what's in the glass.

  8. The Presidential Suite has three bedrooms, two floors, and a piano, in case you feel like performing after a long day of meetings. This all-suite hotel sits in a quiet residential pocket about four kilometers from downtown Guadalajara, which means you get the colonial-style calm and marble bathrooms stocked with Hermès products while the city's chaos carries on without you. A pillow menu, a pool, and unhurried service round out the picture.

  9. The voco brand's first Mexican outpost sits on Avenida Pablo Neruda in Guadalajara's financial district, which is either a happy coincidence or very good marketing. The hotel leans into a quasi-minimalist, modernist look, softened by artwork that nods to local life. Its one restaurant, Querida Luna, does the heavy lifting on atmosphere with a seventh-floor terrace and views to match, while the surrounding Neruda 2828 development handles everything else.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
