The best cafés in Hong Kong, according to the experts: World Coffee Map and Eater have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Blue Bottle Coffee (Citygate) comes out on top.

  5. A minimalist specialty coffee shop tucked into a quiet lane off the Wan Chai bustle, where the pour-over gets the kind of careful attention usually reserved for things that cost a lot more. The room is spare by design, which means the laptops outnumber the menus and no one rushes you out. It's a calm little pocket in a neighborhood that doesn't do calm easily.

  9. A pocket milk tea shop in Wan Chai that has quietly outrun the old cha chaan tengs it grew up alongside. What looks like a to-go counter from the street opens into a small maze of tables inside. The team developed a silk-smooth Hong Kong milk tea, and you'll often spot one of its tea masters still working the counter. Pair it with an egg sandwich in the morning or a pineapple bun thick with butter in the afternoon.

  10. A cha chaan teng with its own bakery tucked into an ex-industrial stretch of Cheung Sha Wan, Sun Wah has been around forever and shows no signs of caring about its own reputation. The egg tarts have a crust that shatters properly and a custard center that wobbles when you look at it. Locals fill the place at all hours, which is the only endorsement that matters in a city that runs on lists.

Metros

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
