The best Italian food in Hong Kong, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, 50 Top Italy, and the South China Morning Post have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo - Bombana comes out on top.

More Less

Estro and Tosca Di Angelo hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the South China Morning Post next.

  1. Umberto Bombana named his fine dining room after a Fellini film, which tells you something about how seriously he takes beauty. Tucked into one of Central's grand towers, it holds three Michelin stars and a wine list deep enough to get lost in. The pasta course is the moment everyone waits for, and gelato finished tableside by the maître d' closes things with a quiet flourish. Formal, unhurried, and built for a long evening.

  2. Rank 2. Estro

    Italian

The bottoni pasta changes shape every season but always arrives like a small argument for moving to Naples. Estro is a fine dining Italian in Central, André Fu-designed in autumnal tones with white linen tables punctuated by vivid murals. Chef Antimo Maria Merone, born in Naples, builds a menu around southern Italian tradition nudged quietly toward Asia. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list.

  3. At 428 metres up the ICC tower, the dining room looks out over a Hong Kong that seems to have been arranged for the purpose. This is a fine-dining Italian restaurant where the chef draws on a Sicilian upbringing to shape an elegant southern Italian menu, holding a Michelin star along the way. The crowd is dressed accordingly, and the pacing is unhurried in the way that only a bill this size can guarantee.

  5. Rank 4. Octavium

    Sicilian

Black truffle turns up on the fresh pasta like punctuation, a signature Umberto Bombana has made his calling card across his Hong Kong restaurants. This Sicilian Italian fine dining room on the eighth floor runs a monthly degustation built around whatever the season is doing, with bread, pasta, and desserts all made in house. It holds two Michelin stars and a spot on The 50 Discovery list, and the room is quiet enough to hear the compliments.

  6. Rank 6. Fiata

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Salvatore Fiata brought his Campanian dough-making to a two-floor pizzeria on Staunton Street, and the result holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a spot on the 50 Top Pizza World list, and a line of people who didn't come for the tourist sights outside. The menu runs classic Neapolitan, margherita through diavola, with an all-Italian drinks list that takes the task seriously. The room is modern without being cold.

  8. The dessert trolley alone tells you what kind of place this is: old-school, unapologetic, and not about to start plating things in smears. Sabatini is a Roman-style trattoria that has been feeding Hong Kong its lasagne bolognese and ossobuco for longer than most of its neighbors have existed, with faded murals, porcelain vases, and a live band most nights giving the room the feel of a Roman holiday that never quite ended.

  9. Rank 9. Carna by Dario Cecchini

    Italian Steakhouse

Dario Cecchini, the famously theatrical Tuscan butcher, brings his nose-to-tail philosophy 39 floors above Tsim Sha Tsui in this Italian steakhouse inside the Mondrian. Dry-aged cuts from Italy, Australia, and the US go over charcoal, and the kitchen works the whole animal rather than just the obvious luxury parts. Harbour views, a strong cocktail program, and service that feels festive rather than formal round things out. It ranks among the World's Best Steak Restaurants.

  11. Rank 9. Noi

    Italian

Inside the Four Seasons, Noi runs a seasonal tasting menu where the kitchen keeps one foot firmly in Japan and the other in Italy, a combination that sounds like a dare and eats like it was inevitable. Prime Japanese seafood turns up alongside handmade pasta and silky egg custards, the whole thing choreographed with a precision that stops just short of ceremony. The room draws the kind of crowd that books months out and still acts surprised to be there.

  12. Rank 12. Giando

    Italian

An Italian fine dining room in Wan Chai that takes the premise seriously enough to land at #12 on 50 Top Italy's global list. The room is elegant without being stiff, designed so you slow down and notice what's around you. The kitchen leans into clean, direct flavors rather than showy technique, and the wine list runs deep on both major labels and small producers the staff can actually talk you through.

  13. Rank 13. Aqua

    Italian

The harbor views from the 17th floor set the tone before anyone opens a menu. Aqua is a date-night restaurant that splits its personality evenly between Italian and Japanese, so the table beside you might be ordering sushi while yours lands a lobster pizza. The room is low-lit and deliberately romantic, the kind of place where the occasion does half the work. Tasting menus and à la carte both available.

  20. Rank 14. Vesu Pizza Bar

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A calzone shaped like a dome and named after Vesuvius tells you everything about the mood here. Vesu is a pizza bar on the 30th floor of One Peking Road, and the Victoria Harbour light show runs behind every meal like a screen saver nobody asked for but everyone watches. The menu spans Neapolitan classics and local riffs, with duck-and-orange and char siu pork pies alongside the standards. It ranked on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific.

  21. Rank 21. Grissini

    Southern Italian

The restaurant bakes its own grissini in-house, which tells you something about how seriously this Italian fine-dining room takes the small stuff. Perched on the second floor of the Grand Hyatt with Victoria Harbour spreading out behind the tables, it leans into the sunny, unfussy cooking of Naples and the southern coast. The chef grew up in Naples, and the menu reads like it. Order something with the Amalfi lemons when they're on.

  22. Rank 21. Popinjays

    Modern Italian

The wraparound terrace on the 26th floor of The Murray is the first thing anyone mentions, and for good reason: the Central skyline unspools in every direction. Inside, this Italian restaurant trades the views for colourful artwork and afternoon light, though the kitchen takes itself seriously regardless. The weekend disco brunch has its own reputation. A vegan menu runs alongside the Italian main event, which leans modern without losing the thread.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
