The best places to eat in Indianapolis, according to the experts: USA Today, Eater, and James Beard Awards have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Bluebeard comes out on top.

More Less

Tinker Street and BODHI hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Sprudge next.

  1. The bread comes from Amelia's next door, and at this neighborhood restaurant it earns its place at every table, not just in the basket. The menu rotates daily around Indiana farms and whatever the season demands, so regulars never quite order the same meal twice. Chef Alan Sternberg has been a James Beard semifinalist multiple times over, and the 2025 nod for Outstanding Hospitality explains the room as much as the food does.

  4. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto Lockerbie Square's old brick row houses while tasting menu courses arrive one by one to steal your attention back. Vida is fine dining, the kind where you're choosing between four and seven courses and the chef is assembling each plate like an argument. The team behind it has drawn two James Beard semifinalist nominations, and the room makes it easy to believe them.

  5. The 2025 U.S. Brewers Cup champion works the bar here, which tells you something about the coffee before you've tasted it. Helm is a roastery cafe selling small-batch microlots in 100-gram bags, roasted on site and pulled toward clarity over comfort. Gesha varieties, floral aromas, lightly roasted. It's also, somehow, the official coffee sponsor of Gen Con, which means the tabletop gaming crowd found good taste before the coffee crowd found them.

  6. The owner placed fourth at the U.S. Brewers Cup, which tells you something about what's in the cup. Amberson is a multi-roaster coffee shop that rotates through a rotating lineup of domestic and international roasters, leaning toward the less obvious names. The vibe is neighborhood-rooted rather than scenester-forward, and the coffees skew toward microlots that don't show up just anywhere.

  8. Rank 8. Beholder

    Modern Midwestern

A repurposed garage on the east side doing dinner-only, with Indiana pork tenderloin and pan-fried walleye anchoring a menu that takes Midwest agriculture seriously without taking itself too seriously. The sommelier's global wine list is the kind of thing you don't expect to find alongside fried local smelt. The chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2025, which tracks for a room that manages to feel both neighborhood and occasion at once.

  10. The menu changes every week, which is either liberating or a scheduling problem depending on how you feel about commitment. This 35-seat Noblesville bistro is the project of a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef who makes his own cured meats, cheeses, and desserts and reworks American classics with international ingredients. A James Beard Award semifinalist in 2023, he's built a genuine neighborhood following in a room small enough that the regulars all seem to know each other.

  11. Rank 11. Diavola Pizza

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Neapolitan-style pizza in an Eastside strip that pulls off the modern trattoria mood without the affectation: soft lighting, considered furniture, a patio worth using. The dough gets a long ferment, which shows in the char and the chew, and the toppings lean on classic Italian regional ideas rather than anything trying to surprise you. The wine list is genuinely interesting for a pizza place. It's the kind of room where you linger longer than you planned.

  12. Rank 11. Sam's Square Pie

    Detroit Pizzeria

Detroit-style square pan pizza is the whole point here, with a thick, airy crumb, a crispy cheese-lacquered edge, and toppings pushed all the way to the crust. The combinations run bold, burrata next to spicy honey, jalapeño whipped ricotta finding its way onto more than one pie. The room is young and casual, the staff talks about the dough the way other people talk about sports, and 50 Top Pizza has taken notice.

  16. The ube latte quietly became a neighborhood obsession here, which is a little funny given that this is a coffee shop where the roaster's heart is in filter work. Blue Mind roasts its single-origin beans onsite in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, and the whole operation has a family-run warmth that isn't performed for the room. Pour-overs and sweet signature drinks share the menu without any obvious hierarchy.

  17. A pop-up coffee project built on barista salaries, which tells you something about the conviction behind it. Neverhome sources from roasters on both coasts and pairs them with an elaborate matcha program, wrapped in what the cofounders call Midwestern hospitality. On weekends the queue snakes down the street, which is either a warning or an endorsement depending on how you feel about waiting for your coffee.

  18. A coffee shop inside a converted firehouse, which means the bones are right even before the espresso arrives. Tinker roasts its own beans and has built a quiet cult following across Indianapolis on the strength of what it calls Hoosier hospitality, a phrase that sounds like a bumper sticker until the staff actually pulls it off. Eight locations around the city, including a couple at the airport, all tracing back to a single used roaster and a good book about coffee.

  20. Rank 25. Bake Sale Indy

    Patisserie

A strip mall bakery wedged between a boxing gym and a bar on Allisonville Road, which is somehow the right neighborhood for ginger molasses monkey bread and buttery pain au chocolat. The chef left a D.C. political career for New Orleans patisserie training before landing in Indianapolis, and the French technique comes through in pastries that have no business being this precise in a parking lot. Saturdays go fast.

  21. The neon pig out front has been guiding people to this barbecue institution for longer than most of its regulars have been alive. Ronald Johnson opened the place as a kid to save up for a bicycle, using his grandmother's hickory-smoked recipe, and has never stopped. The ribs are the reason people drive in from across the state, following that sign like it's pointing somewhere sacred, which, in Indianapolis barbecue terms, it more or less is.

  22. Closed-circuit Burmese musicals play overhead while you eat, which sets the tone at this no-frills Southport restaurant attached to a Southeast Asian supermarket. The menu leans into the flavors of Myanmar, running through tea leaf salad, Burmese-style samosas, and a hominy soup built around beef offal. The community that built this place, Indianapolis's Chin and broader Burmese diaspora, still fills it, and the food reflects that.

  23. A seafood raw bar, a caviar cart stocked with Thomas Keller's Regiis Ova, and a steakhouse menu beneath contemporary chandeliers overlooking Bicentennial Unity Plaza: Commission Row is a special-occasion kind of place where everything is just slightly orchestrated. The martini list alone suggests the clientele arrives in blazers on purpose. The chef came up through Cunningham Restaurant Group, and the room reflects that pedigree, polished without being cold.

  24. Rank 25. Corridor

    Mediterranean

A fresh pasta shop and lunch counter that quietly changed hands and then quietly changed direction, Corridor now pulls from the wider Mediterranean rather than just Italy. The vegetable-forward midday menu shifts with the seasons, with poultry and seafood making occasional appearances. The market side still stocks house-made pastas, olive oils, and charcuterie for the take-home crowd.

  25. Rank 25. El Sabor Catracho

    Latin American

  26. Rank 25. Gather 22

    Pizzeria

The charred pizzas come from family roots: the team behind Gather 22 also runs Byrne's Grilled Pizza, and you can taste the lineage. This all-day neighborhood cafe and bar in Fall Creek does coffee and breakfast in the mornings, then pivots to lunch and dinner with a menu that ranges from those blistered pies to a vegan Philly made with house seitan. A lounge overlooks a pet-friendly patio, and the cocktail list leans playful.

  29. Rank 25. Julieta

    Taqueria

Blue corn tortillas made with help from the chef's mother is a pretty good origin story for a taco shop. Julieta lives inside the historic Stutz Building, and the line sometimes wraps into the alley before the place even opens. The team built a following through years of pop-ups before landing here, and the fillings rotate, though braised brisket and al pastor tend to anchor the menu.

  30. The roast beef Manhattan, a pile of roasted chuck and mashed potatoes drowned in gravy, tells you everything you need to know about this soul food diner on North College. Barack Obama ate here before he was Barack Obama, and the regulars have never let the place forget it. A fire in 2020 took the famously uneven floors but not the rib tips or the neck bones, and the rebuilt room now seats 500 and has a full bar.

  31. A sea-monster mural by Indy artist C.S. Stanley watches over the pastry case at this neighborhood bakehouse, which a team of five local bakers opened together and never looked back. The porridge sourdough and croissants have drawn a following, and the lunch sandwiches and coffee give people an excuse to linger. Strawberry-guava Danish and pretzel croissants make the decision about what to order harder than it needs to be.

  33. The décor alone earns a look: VHS tapes, paint-by-numbers, and a vintage arcade game pile up like a garage sale that never ended. But Love Handle is a breakfast and brunch spot on Mass Ave, and the food keeps pace with the room. Braised meats and fried chicken sandwiches share the menu with hanger steak and eggs, while the pastry case runs to tart cherry-pistachio brownies and espresso-maple cheesecake. Weekends fill early.

  35. The ales are named after tax terms, which is either the best brewing pun or the most on-brand origin story you'll ever hear. This gastropub a few blocks from Lucas Oil Stadium pours Belgian-style beers alongside a menu built on Indiana-grown meat and produce. The kitchen leans hearty, think brisket croquettes and beer-battered pork tenderloin with Belgian fries. The cocktail list takes itself only slightly more seriously than the beer names do.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
