Departments

  1. Rank 1. Steirereck im Stadtpark

    Contemporary Austrian

A glass pavilion sitting inside Vienna's Stadtpark, this fine dining restaurant from Heinz Reitbauer holds three Michelin stars and a spot on the World's 50 Best list. The room is bright and calm, divided into wings that keep the scale from feeling intimidating. The bread and cheese trolleys have their own reputation across the city. Come for the set menu and let the sommelier take the wheel.

  2. Rank 2. Amador

    European

A brick-vaulted cellar on a working wine estate at the edge of the city is an unexpected address for three Michelin stars, but Juan Amador makes it feel inevitable. The tasting menu is precise and modern, each course balanced in a way that reads as effortless without being cold. A terrace and lounge soften the formality, and the wine list, naturally, has the backing of the estate around it.

  3. Rank 3. Doubek

    Modern Japanese

The open kitchen runs on four fire sources, and the chefs sometimes step out to present their own dishes on handcrafted tableware. This is a two Michelin star tasting menu restaurant in Vienna's eighth district where preparations for a single dish can stretch to weeks, Japanese technique slips in quietly, and the host's knowledge of wine is worth the conversation alone.

  4. Rank 3. Konstantin Filippou

    Modern Seafood

Fish and seafood do almost all the talking on Konstantin Filippou's seven-to-nine course tasting menu, with meat appearing only as an occasional understudy. The room runs black and grey, spare and serious, which suits the cooking's precision. The chef's Styrian upbringing and Greek heritage show up quietly in the ingredients and combinations. Two Michelin stars. Wine pairings and Champagne pairings are both on the table, alongside a list with a few international surprises.

  5. You don't choose the menu here, you accept it, which is either thrilling or alarming depending on your relationship with control. This two-Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant in Vienna's 20th district builds each multi-course tasting menu around a single ingredient, announced in advance along with nothing else. The chef's table puts you inside the open kitchen, the sommelier's pairings are famously inventive, and a courtyard terrace softens the whole affair considerably.

  6. The wine cellar holds 60,000 bottles across six vaults, which tells you something about the seriousness of this two-Michelin-starred fine dining room inside the Palais Coburg. The chef's tasting menu runs eight courses, with a ninth available if you're committed, and the kitchen's style is precise and inventive without announcing itself as such. The vaulted ceiling and decorative crystal do the announcing. Staff know the cellar cold.

  7. Brick arches curve over bare wood tables in a room so spare it almost dares the food to fill it. This Michelin-starred creative tasting-menu restaurant in the sixth district does exactly that, with a set menu built around serious sourcing and quiet technique. The open kitchen is visible from every seat, so you can watch the kitchen's focus in real time, which is either reassuring or a little intense depending on the evening.

    The awards

  8. Rank 7. Addiert

    Contemporary Korean

A Michelin-starred counter restaurant on the Kai where roughly a dozen seats wrap an open stainless steel kitchen and the chef's table is the only table. The nine-course set menu takes about three hours to move through Korea, though Austrian trout and European technique show up along the way without apology. The team are generous about explaining what you're eating, which helps when the menu reads like a glossary.

    The awards

  9. The open kitchen is partly on display, which tends to keep the dining room a little more honest. Apron is a fine dining restaurant inside a hotel near the Stadtpark, running five or seven course menus of contemporary cooking that leans into quiet contrasts rather than spectacle. The food is internationally minded without being fussy about it. One Michelin star.

  10. Rank 7. Edvard

    Modern Mediterranean

The menu at this Michelin-starred fine dining room inside the Anantara Palais Hansen Hotel runs five, nine, or somewhere in between courses, which tells you the kitchen is serious. The chef leans heavily on vegetables, herbs, and preserved things, with a quiet Mediterranean thread running through dishes that are colorful without being showy. The wine list tilts Austrian but doesn't stop there. Jackets optional, wallet not.

  11. A curtain separates the daytime cocktail bar at the front from a tiny, Michelin-starred dining room hidden at the back, which keeps things pleasantly conspiratorial. The modern tasting menu, with a vegetarian version available on request, weaves in subtle Italian and Asian notes without making a fuss about it. Covers are few, the service runs warm and precise, and the whole thing feels like a room that's decided not to perform.

    The awards

  12. A one-Michelin-star modern French restaurant inside the Hotel The Amauris, named, like the hotel, after a species of butterfly. Chef Alexandru Simon runs a seven-course set menu that moves between classic French technique and quietly surprising combinations, with a sommelier team whose wine pairings feel less like an add-on and more like the point. Crystal chandelier, oil paintings, open kitchen visible from most tables.

    The awards

  13. The former auction hall of a 1920s pawnshop turns out to be an excellent room for a Michelin-starred dinner, all hardwood floors, designer chairs, and artwork that leans more New York gallery than Viennese tradition. Sören Herzig's creative tasting menu runs in full or shorter formats and can go vegetarian on request. The rooftop terrace is the move for an aperitif before you sit down, assuming Vienna cooperates with the weather.

    The awards

  14. The menu is printed on seed paper you can plant at home, which sets the tone for this Michelin-starred creative vegetarian restaurant in Vienna's first district. A surprise tasting menu built around seasonal, regional produce changes with what's good, and the open kitchen keeps the compact room feeling easy rather than precious. Wine pairings or alcohol-free pairings, your call. The kind of place that takes the food seriously without making you feel like you should do the same.

    The awards

  15. A former pub in Vienna's ninth district, now running a Michelin-starred surprise menu out of a room that still feels like somewhere you'd stop for a beer. The chef's cooking is seasonal and creative, built on contrasts that manage to be bold without being showy. The team keeps things relaxed and attentive in equal measure, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

    The awards

  16. A one-Michelin-star vegetarian restaurant tucked into a historic Vienna townhouse, where the menu runs six or eight courses and can bend fully vegan on request. The kitchen leans hard on seasonal Austrian produce and coaxes depths of flavor from vegetables that make you forget you were expecting meat. Organic wines or thoughtfully built non-alcoholic pairings round things out, and the service is the warm, unrushed kind that makes a long tasting menu feel like a gift rather than an endurance sport.

    The awards

  17. Rank 7. Z'SOM

    Chilean Peruvian

The name means "together" in Viennese dialect, which sets the tone for a snug, sociable fine dining room where the chef weaves Chilean roots and international technique into a fixed menu that earns a Michelin star without taking itself too seriously. One half of the duo runs the floor with genuine warmth while the other works the open kitchen. The wine pairings get a proper, enthusiastic explanation rather than a recitation.

    The awards

  18. Cocktails mixed tableside on a rolling cart set the tone at this Sicilian restaurant on the first floor of the Ritz-Carlton Vienna. The chef's cooking is rooted in Mediterranean tradition and leans heavily on Sicily, with the kind of ingredient quality that makes a simple pasta feel like a deliberate argument. A six-course tasting menu runs evenings; à la carte holds the room the rest of the day. It placed 25th on the 50 Top Italy world list.

  19. A Southbend broiler that hits 1,000°C sits at the center of this steakhouse tucked inside a handsome old Josefstadt townhouse. Cuts run from dry-aged Porterhouse, aged in-house, to Wagyu from Japan and Australia and beef from Austria, Uruguay, and beyond. You pick the weight and the sides. It ranked 86th on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which gives you a sense of the seriousness involved, even if Vienna isn't exactly Tokyo or Buenos Aires.

  20. Rank 20. Chez Bernard

    Contemporary French

On the seventh floor of the MOTTO boutique hotel, Chez Bernard is a French-leaning bistro with a lounge atmosphere that feels more "settle in" than "power through." The Michelin Bib Gourmand kitchen leans into old-school classics, the kind of menu where bouillabaisse and steak tartare are the whole point. One floor up, the rooftop terrace runs a shorter menu but adds a view over Vienna that makes the tradeoff easy.

  21. The tree-shaded garden terrace fills up fast when the weather turns, and the rest of the year it's standing-room cosy inside. This is a neighbourhood Austrian tavern in the Servitenviertel, the kind that runs mushroom goulash and Wiener schnitzel alongside the sort of Sunday roast that makes the week feel less like a mistake. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the lunch special keeps the tables honest.

The striking bar is the first thing you notice when you walk into this cosy bistro-style Spanish tapas spot in Vienna's first district. Small plates travel across regions of Spain, and the wine list stays loyal to Spanish labels throughout. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the room fills fast, so a reservation is less optional than it sounds.

  24. Rank 20. Meierei im Stadtpark

    Austrian German

A rotating spread of around 150 aged cheeses anchors this Austrian restaurant tucked beneath the Reitbauer family's fine dining room in the Stadtpark. The menu leans into classics, Wiener schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn, fried carp, the kind of cooking that doesn't need to explain itself. In summer, the terrace overlooking the River Wien fills up fast, which should tell you something. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  26. Rank 20. Rosi

    Modern Austrian

A creative, predominantly vegetarian restaurant in the 15th district that runs on its own schedule: Friday breakfast, a weekly-rotating Saturday brunch club, affordable lunch specials midweek, and sharing plates in the evening. The menu leans on fermentation, pickling, and charcoal, with a chef's choice option if the whole table commits. The space is minimalist and unfussy, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand keeps the room full of people who clearly got the memo.

    The awards

  27. The covered courtyard alone makes Spittelberg regulars possessive about this place. It's a vegetarian and vegan bistro with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, sitting in one of Vienna's liveliest eat-and-drink neighborhoods, and the minimalist interior manages to feel warm rather than clinical. The kitchen leans hard on organic and Demeter-certified produce, and the sharing menu is priced as though someone wants you to come back.

Italian ingredients arrive on a regular schedule, and the room fills early enough that there's a queue on a Tuesday. 29. Rank 29. Atelier 7 Brasserie

    Contemporary French

The atrium roof of this brasserie inside the Mandarin Oriental is the kind of architectural accident that makes a room feel like a destination on its own. Polished stone tables, no cloths, serious tableware, the contemporary French menu leaning heavily on fish and shellfish. Service is attentive in the way only a well-drilled hotel team can manage. 30. The curving Jugendstil interior on the first floor has been pulling Viennese lunchers and lingerers in since before anyone can remember. This is a traditional restaurant in the old mold, the kind where the service is polished but never stiff and the menu moves between Viennese classics and whatever the season is offering. The room is elegant without making you feel underdressed, which is a harder trick than it sounds.

  31. Rank 29. Buxbaum

    Modern Austrian

Tucked into a Cistercian monastery courtyard in the middle of Vienna, Buxbaum is a sit-down restaurant that somehow feels like a well-kept secret even when it's full. The dining rooms are cosy in the unfussy sense, and the terrace is the kind of quiet you stop expecting to find in a capital city. The menu moves between Austrian classics and international touches, and the wine list leans on small Austrian producers.

  32. Reservations here fill fast, and the room earns its reputation with a sleek, lively feel that sits somewhere between neighborhood bistro and destination dining. The kitchen leans into creative modern cooking with a Central European edge, charcoal-grilled game and house-made sheep's milk kaymak doing the heavy lifting. The wine list is the team's personal picks, which shows. Six courses of whatever they feel like cooking is the move if you can't decide.

  33. The chefs here hunt the game they serve, which tells you most of what you need to know. This farm-to-table restaurant in the lively Spittelberg quarter is built around an open kitchen and long counter, turning out unfussy seasonal plates from exclusively Austrian, mostly organic ingredients. You can do a five-course tasting menu or order à la carte. In summer, a pergola with opening windows gives the feel of a terrace without the rain gamble.

    The awards

  34. A former coffeehouse in Vienna's second district, now running under a sign that says just "K," Das Kraus fits six tables and one tightly focused tasting menu. The chef came up through a Japanese kitchen, and the seasonal Austrian cooking carries the occasional quiet Asian note without making a fuss about it. Temporary art hangs on the walls because the owner runs a gallery, which explains a lot about the room's tone.

  36. Rank 29. das weinberg

    Modern Austrian

A garden terrace deep in the 18th district, leafy enough to forget you're in a city, anchors this modern Austrian restaurant where the menu shifts with the seasons. Dishes come in small tasting portions or full plates, and a five-course wine-pairing menu gives the sommelier crowd something to get serious about. A small Speak Easy Bar handles cocktails when the mood turns sideways.

  37. A corner building in the 4th district that you'd walk past without a second glance hides a Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant spread across three warm, modern rooms, one of which belongs to the sushi bar. Regional Austrian

Tucked into a courtyard off Praterstraße, this regional Austrian restaurant has vaulted ceilings and a terrace that fills up the moment the sun cooperates. The menu runs from Wiener schnitzel to Arctic char on beetroot tartare, which is to say it respects tradition without being bored by it. Austrian

A courtyard terrace tucked behind an old Vienna street makes a strong case for summer bookings at this cosy Austrian restaurant. The monthly five-course menu shifts with the seasons, and at lunch a shorter menu keeps things more relaxed. 42. Rank 29. Gasthaus Stern

    Traditional Austrian

A traditional Viennese gasthaus tucked into a residential neighborhood the tourist buses never find, with wood-paneled walls, creaking floorboards, and high ceilings that feel unchanged for generations. The chef hunts, so offal and game share the menu with the schnitzel you came for. Locals fill the room on weekday evenings, which tells you what you need to know. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  43. Rank 29. Grüne Bar

    Classic Austrian

Lobmeyr crystal chandeliers and original Anton Faistauer paintings set the tone inside this fine dining room at the Hotel Sacher, where the greens and dark wood feel more drawing room than hotel restaurant. The kitchen works in classic European territory with seasonal detours, and you can order from the carte or hand yourself over to a surprise tasting menu. Service is the attentive, unhurried kind that remembers what you ordered without writing it down.

Vegan dining in Vienna could mean a lot of things, and at lara, near Passauer Platz, it means seasonal and regional produce handled with enough imagination to make the menu feel like actual cooking rather than a manifesto. 53. Rank 29. Le Sept

    Contemporary French

The name is just the address in French, which tells you something about the confidence level here. This is a fine dining restaurant inside the Mandarin Oriental, where Jugendstil bones meet a tight set menu built almost entirely around seafood. The kitchen runs classic French through an Asian filter, so a turbot dish might arrive alongside veal tongue and chanterelle, or a sashimi with kimchi-sauerkraut vinaigrette. The room is small, the service is precise, and the wine pairings are taken seriously.

The name comes from the Dallas smoker they run at exactly 107°C, fueled by oak wood, which tells you most of what you need to know. This is a steak-focused grill restaurant on Mariahilfer Strasse where top-grade cuts, including Kobe and Miyazaki Wagyu, are the main event, and you build the plate around them yourself. The interior runs modern and urban, with bar seating if you want it and a terrace when Vienna cooperates.

  61. Rank 29. Reznicek

    Regional Austrian

The cheese display case near the entrance sets the tone: this is a proper Viennese tavern, the kind that still does offal without making a fuss about it. Seasonal Austrian cooking runs from beef soup with shredded pancakes to breaded meats and crêpes, all on simply laid tables with just enough elegance. The wine list is long and pours well by the glass, and the room is warm enough that nobody seems to be in a hurry.

  64. Rank 29. SHIKI Omakase

    Omakase Japanese

You walk through a boutique selling Japanese knives and lacquerware before squeezing into a counter seat among seven other people, which is the entire restaurant. SHIKI Omakase is an eight-seat sushi kaiseki room in Vienna's first district, where the chef works directly in front of you through eleven or so courses. The sake list is serious enough that a sommelier guides the pairing, which is the kind of detail that keeps the evening from feeling like dinner theater.

  65. Otto Zitko covered the entire ceiling in swirling black line-work, and it's hard to look anywhere else when you first walk in. This Austrian brasserie in the Karmeliterviertel serves classics like Wiener schnitzel with potato salad alongside more international riffs, with a terrace out front softened by greenery when the weather cooperates. The room draws a neighborhood crowd that seems to have nowhere better to be, which is probably correct.

  66. Rank 29. Trattoria Martinelli

    Southern Italian

The branzino arrives either buried in a salt crust or grilled, and either way it's the thing the table next to you ordered first. This Italian trattoria sits in the courtyard of a Baroque palace on Freyung, which sounds improbable until you're actually there under the vaulted ceiling or out on the terrace. The family behind it has been at this for decades, importing ingredients from Italy and keeping the menu rooted in southern tradition.

  67. Rank 29. Vestibül

    Viennese Austrian

The room was once the private carriage entrance for Franz Joseph and Sisi on theatre nights, and the columns and stuccowork make sure you don't forget it. Vestibül is a sit-down restaurant inside the Burgtheater serving seasonal Viennese cooking, freshwater fish, and a proper Wiener schnitzel. There's also a bar where you can graze on small plates if you'd rather not commit to the full imperial occasion.

  70. Rank 70. Piazza Colombo

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A rotating oven anchors the dining room of this Neapolitan pizza spot on the ground floor of a stately Vienna hotel. The kitchen turns out properly charred, contemporary-leaning pies with a pronounced crust, alongside a long menu of pasta for anyone whose loyalty wavers. The bar counter with stools is made for an aperitif, and Italian wines keep things appropriately themed. Listed in 50 Top Pizza Europe's Excellent Pizzerias.

  71. Rank 70. Sette

    Roman

Roman-style pizza in Vienna's seventh district, where the dough is long-fermented and hydrated enough to make Neapolitan purists quietly nervous. The kitchen pairs each pizza with a cocktail, which sounds gimmicky until it doesn't. Fried starters, including supplì, come first, and the room keeps things low-key and unhurried. It reads like something transplanted from a fashionable Milan side street, which is more or less the point.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
