The best places to eat in Philadelphia, according to the experts: James Beard Awards, The 50, and Food & Wine have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Kalaya comes out on top.

More Less

Friday Saturday Sunday and Her Place Supper Club hold the next two places. Philadelphia Magazine shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater close behind.

  1. Rank 1. Kalaya

    Southern Thai

A skylit Fishtown warehouse with pistachio-green bar, rattan furniture, and colossal potted palms sets the scene for chef Nok Suntaranon's Southern Thai restaurant, a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner. The food makes a case that Thai cuisine belongs nowhere near a takeaway box: bird-shaped dumplings hide caramelized cod, and the tamarind-glazed pork chop has genuine chophouse swagger. Reservations are hard to get even after the place quintupled in size.

  2. Checkerboard floors, mustard velvet banquettes, and stained glass windows set the scene at this cozy Rittenhouse townhouse, where the eight-course tasting menu weaves classic French technique through ingredients and ideas from the African diaspora. The coconut, the plantain, the frothy sauce mopped up with Caribbean coco bread: it reads like a résumé with a point of view. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner and Michelin-starred, with a bar upstairs that earned its own Beard nomination.

  3. The whole room gets served at once, and each dish gets announced to everyone, which sounds like a dinner party because that's exactly what it is. Her Place is a tasting menu supper club from chef Amanda Shulman, with a Michelin star and a rotating multicourse menu that shifts every two weeks, leaning French and Italian without being stiff about it. The vibe is warm and communal; the cooking, technically sharp.

  4. Windowless, walk-in only, and usually packed, this South Philly izakaya earned a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic and a Michelin Bib Gourmand without ever taking a reservation. The menu roams confidently from raw to fried to grilled, cod skin crisped to a chip, chirashi bowls stacked with caviar and ikura. Regulars who know the right people find their way to the omakase counter tucked in the back, which is its own argument for becoming a regular.

  5. Rank 5. Provenance

    Modern Seafood

A counter inside a historic row house is where the kitchen and the dining room become one thing, which is more or less the point. Provenance is a modern seafood tasting menu where Korean and French influences trade off through a parade of pristine fish, dry-aged proteins, and sauces that do the heavy lifting. The Michelin star and a James Beard semifinalist nod for pastry suggest the ambition runs the full length of the meal.

  6. Rank 6. Mawn

    Southeast Asian Noodle Shop

Phila Lorn calls it a noodle house, which undersells the ambition considerably. The menu moves through Cambodian cooking, bright sour salads, curries, and cold noodles without much concern for borders, which is the whole point. It's a BYO, so walk in with a bottle under your arm and the cozy dining room feels less like a restaurant than someone's very talented friend's house. Lorn won the 2025 James Beard Emerging Chef award, and the room fills up accordingly.

  7. Rank 6. My Loup

    French

The bookshelves and well-worn wood make My Loup feel less like a supper club and more like someone's very good dinner party. The French-leaning menu reads casual but cooks with real intent, seasonal and confidently seasoned, the kind of food where the chef is clearly enjoying themselves. The bar is no afterthought either, named among Punch's best new bartenders. The New York Times and Bon Appétit both took notice, and it's easy to see why.

  9. Rank 8. Zahav

    Evolved Israeli

Tell anyone in Philadelphia you're heading to Zahav and they'll nod like you've said something smart. This Israeli restaurant in Society Hill runs on a format where everyone starts with the same salatim and mezze, then the table splits into skewers or slow-smoked lamb shoulder territory. That lamb has become the thing people talk about on the train home. Reservations drop weeks out, so set a reminder.

  10. By six on a weekend morning, the lamb is already being hacked apart at this barbacoa shop in the Italian Market, and a line has formed before most of the city is awake. Chef Christina Martinez won a James Beard Award for what comes next: slow-cooked lamb folded into fresh tortillas, quesadillas stuffed with housemade Oaxacan cheese, salsas in every color. The crowd runs from construction workers to food journalists, which tells you something.

  11. Rank 11. Doro Bet

    Ethiopian

A handwritten sign on the door warns that the fried chicken takes at least 15 minutes because it comes out of the fryer to order. This West Philly Ethiopian chicken shop coats its birds in a teff-flour buttermilk batter, then finishes them in either a fiery berbere or a lemon-turmeric version the co-owner invented for her kids. Injera and doro wot round things out for the traditionalists, but the chicken is what the line is about.

  12. Rank 11. Machine Shop

    French Bakery

The car lift and air pump are still there, which gives this French bakery in a former auto body shop a particular kind of credibility. The laminated pastries are serious, the canelés are delicate, and the seasonal produce finds its way into croissants and Danish that justify the line. A James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Bakery, it has also landed on The New York Times' list of the best bakeries in the country.

  13. An all-day American bistro across from Rittenhouse Square where, on Sunday afternoons, some of Philadelphia's own chefs quietly eat their days off. The menu tracks regional farmers closely, and the natural wine list is among the longer ones in the city. The New York Times named it among the 25 best restaurants in Philadelphia, which the Sunday regulars already knew.

  14. Rank 13. High Street

    Seasonal American

A bakery counter next door, a private dining room in back, and cooking classes on the books make this feel more like a culinary compound than a restaurant. The lunch crowd fills up on hoagies, but dinner is where the kitchen stretches out, turning out pastas and wood-fired pizzas that take real swings. Ellen Yin holds a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur, and the open kitchen makes it easy to watch the team earn it.

  15. A neon green peace sign marks the door on a narrow Fishtown lane, and inside what used to look like an auto repair shop, the room opens into light wood and clean lines, somewhere between a pizza bar and a Scandinavian chapel. The menu is short, the dough is organic, and the crust stays crisp and chewy to the last bite. Natural wines and snacks keep you busy while you wait. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  16. The meal ends with saltwater taffy tucked into the check, which tells you everything about Greg Vernick's intentions at this sleek seafood restaurant inside the Four Seasons. Terrazzo floors and floating orb fixtures signal expense-account territory, but the menu keeps drifting back to Jersey Shore summers. The branzino, the sardine toast, the ceviche all read serious, and then there's a diner slice from the pastry case waiting at the end.

  17. Rank 17. Dim Sum Garden

    Shanghainese

Soup dumplings, made by hand, are the reason to find this Chinatown storefront, which has been a Philadelphia institution for long enough that regulars still refer to the old address. It's a casual Chinese restaurant with a broader menu than the xiao long bao headline suggests, running through stir-fries, noodles, and a full roster of house-made dumplings. The newer space added a bar and private dining room, but the vibe stayed mercifully unfussy.

  18. Rank 17. El Chingon

    Vibrant Taqueria

The cemitas, Puebla-style sandwiches on sesame-seeded buns baked in-house, are what anchor this colorful South Philly Mexican restaurant. Bring friends and a strategy, because the menu rewards sharing, and skipping the lacy griddled flour tortillas would be a regrettable act of self-sabotage. The chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, plus a spot on the New York Times restaurant list, which is a lot of hardware for a tight little room.

  19. Rank 17. Emmett

    Levantine

Emmett is a Kensington restaurant that treats the Levant as a starting point and then wanders off through France, Italy, and the American South without a map. The cocktail list includes a lamb fat washed rye, so the bar is also in on it. Dinner here is a sit-down affair, polished and on the pricier side, and the James Beard folks nominated it for Best New Restaurant. The main problem is ordering a reasonable amount.

  20. Rank 17. Honeysuckle

    Afro-centric American

The seating choices alone tell you something: big communal tables, a long bar, or low couches, all inside a roomy industrial space on North Broad. Honeysuckle is an Afro-centric American restaurant built around a prix fixe that moves from hush puppies with country ham to wagyu beef cheek and oxtail tamales without ever losing its thread. The chef earned a 2026 James Beard nomination, and the cooking shows why, course after careful course.

  21. The sign is so discreet you'll walk past the townhouse twice before finding it, which is, in its way, a promise about how the evening goes. Vetri Cucina is an intimate Italian tasting room on Spruce Street, been around forever, with the kind of unhurried service that feels like it has nowhere else to be. A 1950s espresso machine holds court at the end of the meal, a fitting final argument from a kitchen that takes its classics seriously.

  22. The line wraps around the corner off Palumbo Park at any hour, which tells you what you need to know before you even smell the place. Angelo's is a cash-only, no-seating slice shop and cheesesteak counter in South Philly, meaning you'll be eating on a bench or a curb like everyone else. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which the sesame-seed hoagies loaded with Cooper Sharp do nothing to contradict.

  24. Rank 24. Ambra

    Italian

One communal table, four kitchen seats, and a tasting menu that runs three hours minimum, because the team is not in a hurry and neither should you be. Ambra is high-end Italian tasting, with house-made pasta, warm focaccia, and a beverage pairing that isn't optional. The New York Times named it among Philly's 25 best, and Philadelphia Magazine put it at number four on their annual list.

  25. Rank 24. Illata

    Creative Italian

A twenty-seat BYOB in Grays Ferry where the menu runs fewer than a dozen small plates, almost all of them seafood-leaning and swapped out with the seasons. The kitchen pairs familiar things in ways that quietly surprise you, carrots with crab, mussels over miso and chili oil. Bring something good to drink, because the food asks for it, and book ahead, because twenty seats go fast.

  26. Rank 24. Little Fish

    Asian-Influenced Seafood

A BYOB fine dining room in Bella Vista small enough that the handwritten menus feel like personal notes from the kitchen. The chef's Asian-influenced seafood changes with the seasons, leaning into combinations that sound odd on paper and make obvious sense on the plate. Bring a bottle, settle in, and let the prix fixe do the work. A 2025 James Beard Outstanding Hospitality semifinalist, which tracks for a room this attentive.

  27. A section of the menu simply called "On toast" tells you most of what you need to know about this New American bistro on Walnut Street. The chef trained under Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and that classical foundation shows in the confident pairing of seasonal and luxury ingredients across small plates, raw dishes, and larger shared plates. The brownstone space runs two floors but stays intimate, with a counter facing the kitchen for anyone who wants to watch.

  28. South Philly red-sauce bar that has been around forever, bought and quietly restored by Joey Baldino, who has a gift for making a room feel like it never changed. The bones are exactly what you'd expect: dim, neighborhood, no-nonsense. The food is where things get interesting, with stuffed calamari and lobster Francesca that make the whole retro room suddenly feel like a serious argument. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List, and that tracks.

  29. Rank 29. Càphê Roasters

    Specialty Vietnamese Coffee Shop

Sunlit, laptop-scattered, and full of potted plants in all the ways you'd expect from a third-wave coffee shop, except this one roasts Vietnamese specialty beans and serves bánh mì stuffed with pork meatballs in tangy tomato sauce on Ba Le Bakery bread. The drink menu wanders into fizzy espresso tonics with housemade watermelon syrup. A James Beard semifinalist for its beverages, and on the New York Times list of Philadelphia's top restaurants.

  30. Rank 29. Fiore

    Italian

Pasta at 8 a.m. is either a cry for help or a reasonable lifestyle choice, and Fiore makes a compelling case for the latter. This tiny Italian cafe on Frankford Ave grew out of a larger restaurant that shed its wood-fired oven and half its menu, keeping only what the chef does best: regional Italian baked goods, bright seasonal salads, and cacio e pepe that regulars order before most places have unlocked the door.

  31. Pressed tin ceiling, globe lights, and worn wood floors set the mood at this seafood restaurant on South 20th, where the menu stays tight enough that everything on it feels deliberate. The raw bar anchors the room, oysters and scallops up front, while the gumbo pulls in lobster, crab, and Carolina gold rice. Grab a seat at the back bar if you can, the chefs are right there. A James Beard semifinalist in 2026.

  32. Rank 29. Mish Mish

    Mediterranean

A corner spot on East Passyunk with awnings, a few sidewalk tables, and a spare interior that somehow feels warmer than it looks. Mish Mish is a vegetable-forward Mediterranean small-plates restaurant run by a former food writer who traded criticism for a kitchen, which tracks. The menu leans shareable, smoke and char doing most of the talking. The New York Times named it among Philadelphia's 25 best restaurants right now.

  33. The small tables at this modern New American restaurant come fitted with little drawers for your cutlery, which tells you something about how seriously things are taken here. Chef Randy Rucker runs a monthly multicourse tasting menu with a seafood lean and a French-Japanese sensibility, all from local ingredients. Counter seats face the kitchen. A James Beard semifinalist, and the floor-to-ceiling corner windows make the room feel like a decent consolation prize.

  34. Tapioca dumplings arrive wrapped in banana leaves you peel back like a present, and a catfish hot pot comes in a tureen with tomatoes and okra bobbing in tangy broth, and somehow the room stays minimal enough that the food fills every inch of it. This Vietnamese restaurant on East Passyunk has a James Beard semifinalist nod and a spot on the New York Times restaurant list, which tracks once the bánh bèo chén lands on the table.

  35. Rank 35. Laurel

  36. Rank 35. Little Walter's

    Eastern European

A dim, low-slung corner restaurant in East Kensington where the pierogies are non-negotiable and the rotisserie pork lands on stewed kapusta like it's been doing this forever. The sourdough comes with dill butter and smalec, the seasonal water ice is a very Philly curveball, and the whole place reads like Polish comfort food filtered through a neighborhood that just figured out it had good bones. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List.

    Vegetarian Italian

The open kitchen takes up half the dining room at this cozy vegan restaurant in Northern Liberties, which runs on foraged produce, small local suppliers, and the chef's own ferments and preserves. The menu is shareable Italian-inflected plates, around three per person, with a casual Northern Liberties crowd that books the place solid most nights. A James Beard semifinalist, and one of those spots that makes vegetable-forward feel like a choice rather than a compromise.

Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap a corner of Fishtown where chef Frankie Ramirez runs an ambitious, high-end Mexican restaurant closer in spirit to Mexico City than to anything else on the Philly dining scene. The cocktail list leans into sotol and other Mexican ingredients, and the menu is built for sharing, from tostadas to a whole wood-fired pulpo. A James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist in 2026.

  44. Rank 42. Hiroki

    Omakase Japanese

The counter seats twelve, and the chef shaped the room after the traditional townhouses of Kyoto, which tells you something about the attention at work here. Hiroki is an omakase spot in Fishtown where around twenty courses move from delicate snacks through grilled fish and wagyu to a nigiri sequence that builds in intensity as it goes. Book the counter, not a table, and consider the sake pairing if you want a tour through several styles.

  46. The green salad here became a Philadelphia talking point, which tells you everything about what kind of tavern this is. Meetinghouse is an American bar and kitchen in Fishtown where the menu looks almost suspiciously plain, right up until the food arrives. The hot roast beef sandwich and pork-and-beans both suggest a kitchen treating simple things as the whole point, not the backup plan. Named to The New York Times Restaurant List for 2025.

  48. Rank 49. Fiorella

    Italian

The dirty pasta water martini has its own Esquire listing, which tells you something about how Fiorella operates. This South Philly pasta spot, a Michelin Bib Gourmand, runs a short, handmade menu out of what used to be a three-generation butcher shop. Marc Vetri's name is on it, the room is small, and the cacio e pepe is the kind that makes you stop talking mid-sentence.

  51. Cute tile floors and globe lights in a relaxed Old City row house, and the menu reads like someone just got back from Lyon and had a lot of feelings about it. 52. The whole Peking duck arrives lacquered and ready for ceremony, and a Chinatown institution like this one has been running that ceremony for a long time. It's a roast-meat Chinese restaurant with a big menu behind the duck, including beef chow fun, egg noodle soups, and walnut shrimp for the table. The bird also turns up in fried rice and spring rolls if you'd rather skip the full production. There's a stall at Reading Terminal Market, but the original room is the move.

  53. Rank 54. Suraya

    Lebanese

A Lebanese restaurant in Fishtown that opens as a bakery and shop before expanding into a full dining room and a generous rear garden. The menu runs from man'oushe and mezze at lunch to grilled whole poussin and kibbeh at dinner, with a tasting spread if the menu feels ambitious. The pita comes warm from the oven, which sounds minor until it arrives and suddenly isn't. A Michelin selected spot.

  54. A Center City brownstone that's been quietly making the case for vegan fine dining from its spot on Locust Street. Inside, the space unfolds across several rooms with the feeling of a very elegant townhouse, warm lighting and all. The plant-based menu leans into seasonal ingredients and international flavors, so dishes arrive with a sharpness that gives the table something to argue over. Seasonal cocktails and attentive service round out what amounts to a full night.

  56. Rank 59. Bastia

    Mediterranean

The pillowy ricotta and semolina dumplings in spicy Calabrian arrabbiata have become something of an obsession in Fishtown, and that kind of word-of-mouth is hard to fake. This upscale Mediterranean restaurant draws from the spirit of Corsica, so the room feels warm and coastal rather than stuffy, and the menu follows suit. Named Esquire's Best New Restaurant of 2024, it earns the attention without seeming to try.

  57. The skylight over the dining room does most of the heavy lifting at this Latin American restaurant and rum bar on Sansom Street, flooding plates of vaca frita with the kind of light that makes you briefly question which city you're in. The daiquiris are serious, the ceviche keeps pace, and the piña coladas have a small but devoted following. A James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist runs the kitchen.

  58. A steam table loaded with rendang and jackfruit stew is the first thing you see, and the family photos taped to the walls make the second impression. This South Philly Indonesian spot is a home-cooking operation in the most literal sense, now run by the founder's daughter. Rice platters come heaping, sambal comes with the order, and extra scoops are fifty cents, which is the kind of pricing that earns genuine loyalty.

  59. Rank 59. SAO

    Seafood

The Lao "crack sauce" on the oysters tells you everything about the approach: Southeast Asian flavor logic applied to a seafood-forward menu, from crudos with coconut and chili jam ponzu to whole fish. James Beard Award winner Phila Lorn, who also runs the notoriously hard-to-book Mawn, opened this one in 2025, and it skews a bit pricier and more oceanic than its sibling, with wok-seared noodles keeping things from getting too precious.

  60. By day it's a sausage shop slinging serious sandwiches; by night, tables get jammed into every corner of the meat case and a monthly five-course dinner runs to monkfish, duck-stuffed peppers, and scallops with corn polenta, all with punk on the speakers. A James Beard semifinalist and a Bon Appétit pick for best new restaurant, it's the kind of place Philadelphia gets very right and nowhere else quite explains.

  62. Rank 65. Tabachoy

    Filipino

A casual BYOB in Bella Vista where the adobo arrives as braised chicken in waves of vinegar and deep umami, and people tend to remember it. The Caesar gets a hit of bagoong, the fermented fish paste that makes a Filipino pantry tick, and the broccoli rabe nods to the South Philly block it sits on. Bring a bottle, bring a friend who wants to share everything, and leave the menu nowhere near unfinished.

    Upscale Sicilian

  64. Rank 68. Laser Wolf

    Middle Eastern

Charcoal skewers arrive at the table in steady rotation while a spread of salatim fills every gap in between. This Fishtown skewer shop opened before the Brooklyn outpost, so Philly claims the original. Industrial bones get softened by hanging lanterns and greenery, which makes the whole room feel festive rather than warehouse-cold. The lamb ribs in cola and sour cherry glaze have earned their reputation. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list the year it opened.

  66. A roadside farmstand with a raw bar is either a great idea or a very convincing fever dream, and Sweet Amalia is the former. The oysters come from the team's own aquaculture operation in the Delaware Bay, and the weekly menu pivots around whatever the chef finds interesting: falafel over cucumbers, grilled eggplant with peperonata, a BLT stacked with heirlooms. You order at the counter and eat outside at picnic tables. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List.

  68. CJ & D's is a tomato pie counter tucked inside Cartesian Brewing on East Passyunk, which means you order in person and then drink beer while a pie is made, one at a time. Trenton-style puts the cheese down first and the sauce on top, an arrangement that looks like a mistake until you see the thin, blistered crust. There are four pies on the menu, so the hardest decision is how many to commit to before the first one lands.

  72. Cash only, order at the window, wait for your name. Dalessandro's has been doing cheesesteaks this way in northwest Philly for what feels like forever, and the system is not up for debate. The roll is soft, the chopped steak is tender, and the Cheez Whiz is not a compromise but the point. Add fried onions, say yes to the crushed hot peppers, and find a sidewalk table. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  73. Rank 77. Del Rossi's

    American

In Northern Liberties, this casual American spot bakes its own sesame-seeded sourdough for the cheesesteaks, which feels like a small act of defiance in a city where the sandwich is a religion. Chopped steak, fried onions, and Cooper Sharp come on that crackly bread, and the kitchen also pulls thin Brooklyn-style grandma pies. The Michelin Guide hands out a Bib Gourmand here, which tracks given how much is happening at the simple tables in back.

  74. Rank 77. Dizengoff

    Israeli

The hummus here comes with brown butter and crispy garlic, which tells you most of what you need to know. Dizengoff is a bright, casual Israeli café, all dangling greenery and counter-order ease, with no reservation drama. It's the laid-back sibling to Zahav in the same extended family of restaurants. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the pita is baked fresh, the schnitzel is proper, and the za'atar chicken means business.

  75. The corned beef and pastrami sandwiches here are the kind that require a game plan before you pick them up. This old-school Jewish deli in Queen Village has been feeding Philadelphia for as long as anyone can remember, with a menu that runs from Reubens and smoked fish to cheesesteaks and a full breakfast. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Come hungry and do not make afternoon plans.

  77. Rank 77. Sally

    Pizzeria

Wood-fired, naturally leavened sourdough pies in a snug Spruce Street spot where a heart-shaped lamp hangs overhead and wine bottles line the windows. Sally is a neighborhood pizza parlor that pulls in families, couples, and the natural-wine crowd in roughly equal measure. The thin crust holds its crispness under a full load of toppings, which in Philadelphia, where pizza opinions run deep, is not a small claim. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand.

  78. Rank 84. Down North Pizza

    Detroit-Style Pizzeria

  79. Purple walls, tatami tables on one side, and a menu that has no interest in what everyone else is doing right now. Roxanne is a small creative restaurant in South Philly where the chef named the place after her mother and mostly just wants to cook. The dishes are few and the seasoning is confident, duck arriving with a wedge of Stilton as if that were always the plan. It probably was.

  80. Rank 87. Southwark

    Italian Mediterranean

Botanical prints on pale walls, a red brick patio out back, and an Italian Mediterranean restaurant that treats a seasonal wine list as seriously as the kitchen treats pasta. The bucatini and the clams suggest the Mediterranean mindset is more than decorative. Queen Village locals who know their way around a wine list fill the bar up front while the dining room stays unhurried.

  82. Rank 89. Bricco Coal Fired Pizza

    Coal-fired Pizzeria

The coal-fired oven sits at the center of the room like the point it's trying to make, and the point is a New York-style pie with deep Italian roots cooked the way early immigrants did it, because wood was too expensive. This is a comfortable, full-service pizza spot with appetizers, a solid wine list, and a menu that ranges well past margherita territory. Ranked 31st on 50 Top Pizza USA.

  85. Rank 92. Fork

    New American

The kind of New American restaurant where your water glass refills before you notice it's low and plates disappear at exactly the right moment. The executive chef, who came up through Noma and Vernick, brings a menu worth slowing down for in a dining room that rewards lingering. Old City has plenty of options, but few rooms where the service feels this quietly choreographed.

  87. Marc Vetri is a name Philadelphians say with some reverence, and this casual pizza spot carries the family flag across a few Pennsylvania locations. The wood-fired pies come round or by the meter, with a dough that stays light without making a fuss about it. The menu runs from straight Italian classics toward a few fusion detours, and the salads are more interesting than they have any obligation to be. A pizza kit to take home rounds things out nicely.

  89. Tastykake wrappers, scrapple company pennants, and Philly sports ephemera cover every wall at this Fishtown diner, where the decorating philosophy appears to be "yes, and." Omelets come loaded with local kielbasa sourced from an old-school Port Richmond butcher, hash browns arrive properly shattered on the outside, and the scrapple takes a left turn with spicy whitefish and pickled peppers. Daytime only, cheerful, and very much a neighborhood fixture.

  90. Tesiny is a small raw bar and charcoal grill on a South Philly block of old-school institutions, a short walk from an abandoned garage, which is not the setting oysters usually ask for. Inside, velvet chairs and late-90s R&B give it the feel of a very good bar mitzvah afterparty. Stop in for a drink and a snack or stay for dinner, though expect a sit-down price, not a counter-service one.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
