The best American food in Philadelphia, according to the experts: the James Beard Awards, AAA, and Wine Enthusiast have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Friday Saturday Sunday comes out on top.

More Less

a.kitchen and High Street hold the next two places. The James Beard Awards and the Michelin Guide show up on more of this list than any other guide.

American elsewhere

  1. Checkerboard floors, mustard velvet banquettes, and stained glass windows set the scene at this cozy Rittenhouse townhouse, where the eight-course tasting menu weaves classic French technique through ingredients and ideas from the African diaspora. The coconut, the plantain, the frothy sauce mopped up with Caribbean coco bread: it reads like a résumé with a point of view. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner and Michelin-starred, with a bar upstairs that earned its own Beard nomination.

  2. Rank 2. a.kitchen

    American

An all-day American bistro across from Rittenhouse Square where, on Sunday afternoons, some of Philadelphia's own chefs quietly eat their days off. The menu tracks regional farmers closely, and the natural wine list is among the longer ones in the city. The New York Times named it among the 25 best restaurants in Philadelphia, which the Sunday regulars already knew.

  3. Rank 2. High Street

    Seasonal American

A bakery counter next door, a private dining room in back, and cooking classes on the books make this feel more like a culinary compound than a restaurant. The lunch crowd fills up on hoagies, but dinner is where the kitchen stretches out, turning out pastas and wood-fired pizzas that take real swings. Ellen Yin holds a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur, and the open kitchen makes it easy to watch the team earn it.

  4. Rank 4. Honeysuckle

    Afro-centric American

The seating choices alone tell you something: big communal tables, a long bar, or low couches, all inside a roomy industrial space on North Broad. Honeysuckle is an Afro-centric American restaurant built around a prix fixe that moves from hush puppies with country ham to wagyu beef cheek and oxtail tamales without ever losing its thread. The chef earned a 2026 James Beard nomination, and the cooking shows why, course after careful course.

  5. The green salad here became a Philadelphia talking point, which tells you everything about what kind of tavern this is. Meetinghouse is an American bar and kitchen in Fishtown where the menu looks almost suspiciously plain, right up until the food arrives. The hot roast beef sandwich and pork-and-beans both suggest a kitchen treating simple things as the whole point, not the backup plan. Named to The New York Times Restaurant List for 2025.

  6. Cash only, order at the window, wait for your name. Dalessandro's has been doing cheesesteaks this way in northwest Philly for what feels like forever, and the system is not up for debate. The roll is soft, the chopped steak is tender, and the Cheez Whiz is not a compromise but the point. Add fried onions, say yes to the crushed hot peppers, and find a sidewalk table. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  7. Rank 6. Del Rossi's

    American

In Northern Liberties, this casual American spot bakes its own sesame-seeded sourdough for the cheesesteaks, which feels like a small act of defiance in a city where the sandwich is a religion. Chopped steak, fried onions, and Cooper Sharp come on that crackly bread, and the kitchen also pulls thin Brooklyn-style grandma pies. The Michelin Guide hands out a Bib Gourmand here, which tracks given how much is happening at the simple tables in back.

  8. Rank 8. Fork

    New American

The kind of New American restaurant where your water glass refills before you notice it's low and plates disappear at exactly the right moment. The executive chef, who came up through Noma and Vernick, brings a menu worth slowing down for in a dining room that rewards lingering. Old City has plenty of options, but few rooms where the service feels this quietly choreographed.

  10. A Citywide Special and a burger, treated with the focus of a fine-dining kitchen, is Royal Tavern's whole argument. This Bella Vista bar has been doing burgers, cherry BBQ wings, house-made mortadella, and grilled cheese in a narrow, glowing room on Passyunk for as long as anyone can remember. The kind of place where you go in for one drink and linger over two courses you didn't plan on ordering.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
